At least if I buy new shelves it will functionally improve my life and give me a little project. Art supplies are also acceptable, but not clothing / makeup / skincare.

I am not saying over pay like getting ripped off. I am saying overspend like actually just buy the items you want, buy that couch ( and not the knockoff) but the one you actually wanted. You work hard, you should reward yourself and having nice things is fun. Tracking a record player down or a specific chair and then finally acquiring it and putting it in your house is part of making your house a home.

very satisfying to prolong the life of things in a world where not very many things are made to last. just applied renovating cream to my blundstones. cleaning my car, sewing up holes or tears in clothing, trimming the wicks of candles, and using slip-on covers for old books fall into this category too

For me this is mostly books and antiques but I think it is a versatile mindset

This has helped me a lot when paralyzed over big life decisions. I can’t know the future, and therefore might make the “wrong choice” or have unexpected consequences. But if I think about other times I’ve ended up in a bad job / relationship / living situation / whatever, I have always figured it out and gotten through it. So it’s rational to believe I will do it again. Also helpful for decision anxiety: You are making the best decision you can with the information you have right now. You might change your mind with new information, and that’s ok.
