Predictable rec from me but also a very special rec as it's my 100TH REC! Riot Grrrl was a feminist punk movement in the Pacific North West in the 90s. I became of a devotee of the movement after reading Carrie Brownstein's memoir Hunger Makes Me a Modern Girl. So many legendary punk bands came out of this time like Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, and Excuse 17. The genre is so important because it created space for women to make music about emotions typically only deemed socially acceptable for men to embody (e.g. RAGE). I implore you to listen to my personal favorite riot grrrl song: Watchmaker by Excuse 17. Soooooooo good and angry. Basically about mansplaining. More than just the music, it was an entire subculture with zines, art, and activism. The artwork created for the zines is so sick. I hope to one day make something as cool. Link on the post takes you to a catalogue of all the zines. :) The whole vibe of the movement obviously really speaks to me and I wish I could've been there and been a part of it. Hope to one day visit the PNW and feel a little closer to it.
