My calendar this year has 52 of these week at a glance pages but I don’t think that way. So, I've been inspired by Ross Gay’s Book of Delighs to start recording the little moments and sensations that bring me joy throughout the day. An analog pi.fyi, if you will. heres some of what I have so far: - Waking up to the sound of my upstairs neighbor‘s footstep. It sounded nostalgic. Felt like company. - Strawberry jam - feeling tender for strangers: their lips, nail colors, their small wrists. Thinking of all the lives we hold gently. - A young girl bought an LP at the bookstore just before I left. She stroked its cover with love - Green tiles —the mint shade always makes me think of Jancie - Charlie’s little bop and punch dancing to some German language punk - lunch with Katherine, curry Brussels sprouts - small talk at the photo studio. The photographer's brother was named after their dad, stole his identity, bought jet skis.

wait i also have a podcast for you!! wonderful by rachel and griffin mcelroy is them just each choosing a random topic each week that brings them joy and explaining it. sometimes it’s stuff like a movie or band or smthn, but a lot of times it’s more conceptual or stuff you genuinely wouldn’t consider being grateful for. like parrots. like i never wouldve thought about it but yeah no i am grateful that there are colorful talking birds in the world

florinegrassenhopper it’s called joy tactics and the premise is that they spend an episode talking about a topic that brings people joy and they end each episode with a list of things that brought them joy that week. they don’t really stick to the topic and it ends up being pretty stupid most of the time but they are Entertaining

I started this a couple of years ago. Now whenever I feel like I've never been happy before, I can open at random and see that on 12/11/22 I danced cheek-to-cheek with my husband in the living room, that on 8/12/23 I raced bikes down the MBT on the way home from a Richard Bishop concert, that on 1/19/24 I walked through the snow to get ice cream, and that just last week I heard a couple singing "Strangers in the Night" on the beach as I watched a sunset so beautiful it brought me to tears.

I tend to have the most words when I'm angry, upset, or hurt. My journals, notes app, and artwork all can attest to this. When I'm happy life is easier, I don't need to write to feel sane or rationalize my feelings. I sleep well, I eat okay, I see people. I'm busy, I'm content. But this has the unfortunate side effect of not having my happiest moments stored in as much detail as my worst ones. I can find 22 notes entries with the word heartbreak but only 5 with the word delight. PI FYI is encouraging me to document the good. And I know I will appreciate being able to scroll through the things I liked this year in a way that I haven't been able to before.

I make photo albums of the polaroids I take of my friends, work, and travels. I love having a physical object that can bring back so many memories. Like many, reading the book The Artist's Way helped me find ways to connect to myself and my art. I adopted the practice of "Morning Pages" which is writing three pages in a journal stream of consciousness style to empty your mind of cluttered thoughts before you get into your day. This has helped my anxiety levels and enhanced my focus so much. I love reading them back after enough time has passed to reflect on what has worried me and remind myself that all things must pass.

No screen Sundays. If I want to listen to music its CDs or radio. If I want to watch a movie, no I don’t. If I want to see a friend, I will make plans with them on Friday or Saturday to meet up. As a result, I read more, write more, and sit with questions like “did Citizen Kane‘s 50 year winning streak in the Sight and Sound critics choice survey end in 2012 or 2022? When did Stephen Merritt come out? Whats the etymology of Whitsun?“ This is something that I have practiced off and on for many years but I’ve been doing it every week since December and I love the way that it just allows me one day of true freedom and rest.
