I use an analog alarm clock at my bedside and a sunrise lamp that makes my body feel like the day has started even tho in the middle of winter on the mid Atlantic she has yet to make an appearance. drink a glass of water (I recommend a small glass with a lid and straw) before my feet find the floor. tea + yoga as the sun rise

On days when I don’t have a concrete agenda to plow through I struggle to peel myself out of the sheets. This is what helps me: - I leave my shades open the night before so my body wakes up with the sun. - I try to keep my room clean. Mostly to avoid the feeling of being “stuck”. - I think of breakfast, & use it to treat myself. The excitement of trying a new recipe or eating something familiar is sometimes enough to catapult me off my mattress. - A nice shower. Steam, music, eucalyptus. Make the experience enjoyable. I’ve been thinking about buying these waterproof lamps to upgrade my shower environment. Ambient light over the big light always.

for awhile it was washing my face, then it was splashing it with cold water, then it was washing again. frankly the splashing is a better wake-up call. then I like to make my little coffee or my little tea with the radio on - love radio for its unpredictability, variety, and the human connection. finally I’m picking a personal fragrance, which helps set the mood for the day, and forgetting five things as I head out the door so that I have to return five times and end up sweetly and reliably 17 minutes late for work 🌷

Ha ha but seriously I like to get up, turn on my manual espresso machine so that it has time to heat up, and just start doing things right away to push through the groggy sleepiness. If I loved myself I would do some kind of ten-minute stretch video like this. Once I move out of the satanic office park in which I currently reside I will start taking walks with my dog first thing in the morning. It’s 25 minutes long but during some of the hardest times of my life listening to this immediately upon waking up and before even getting out of bed has been a soothing balm to my soul…

at least casually. don’t delete the accounts but don’t have the apps on your phone either. rediscover your love of reading thru the magic of recognizing titles strangers are holding on the subway. become a subway reader. don’t use sound as an escape from your thoughts/feelings/surroundings. grocery shopping without headphones is actually kind of beautiful! pick up a new hobby or two or three. one of them should be something you’re not good at, and at least one should be no- or low-cost. never. stop. learning. the library, the parks and rec department, and nearby museums offer great materials already but also usually have free lectures or courses. go outside more. like, a lot more. (took this much less literally, so apologies if it’s not what you’re looking for lol — as a narcoleptic I have no tips on how to Not Sleep since Sleep is basically my job)
