god i don’t even know where to start. these folk were so free in a time where queerness wasn’t as widely accepted. reminds me to live life to my fullest and be grateful for those who have laid down the groundwork for us to live the way we can now.

an incredible film !!! black queer history is FULL of forgotten legends who have shaped mainstream culture and continue to have a lasting impact on fashion, language, art & performance.
Paris Is Burning immortalises and preserves the legacy and the stories of the people featured in this film along with the spaces, community and families they created for themselves in a society that consistently marginalised and discriminated against them.

“Pre-AIDS gay media always makes me emotional. Unabashedly living as queer in the face of everything makes me emotional. I love the intimacy of this documentary so much. It's so casual and the camera revels in the queens' presence it feels like I could reach through the screen and touch them and then I get emotional again that I cannot. Crystal LaBeija, one of the most influential queens in history, you will always be loved and your legacy is your true win. I love queer flaboyancy and homosexual sensability. Not only have we always been here, but some of us have even always dared to live as we naturally are.” Read the rest of my review on Letterboxd

Why is this such a lost art? Bring together those friends that would never have met other wise. Make the people you love, love each other. I recently had a small birthday wine n dine with my friends and anticipated awkwardness between my different groups of friends, but it was the complete opposite. God I love my friends and love making a space for them to mingle and laugh in eeeee. I think in a time where my friends and I are transitioning to adulthood and focusing on careers, this brings something to look forward to and a way to create a world outside of work and study.
