there's no shortage of japanese groceries in the city, and most of them will have a selection of premade onigiri. they are the perfect mid-outing refuel and conveniently portable. pairing one with a rose green tea and a packet of hi chews makes me ascend

if you're a coffee head- koffee mameya for elite beans/tasting experience tonkatsu maisen aoyama - I think about this tonkatsu often yoyogi park - great for people watching + general chilling kushiwakamaru - yakitori spot, there might be a wait but it will be worth it kappabashi street - packed with restaurant supply stores/places to get really nice knives, or just cute reasonably priced culinary souvenirs e.g. sake sets higashiya ginza - recommend trying a set course here if you're interested in japanese traditional sweets/tea galerie dentsdelion - amazing antique store

shot on brainwave 400 film, a japanese indie film only sold at one shop by the Ebisu train station. camera is a nikon L35 AF. this is my husband standing in front of a dumpling place in the neighborhood immediately surrounding Nakano Broadway. We had a night of small bites at several Izakayas after browsing Japanese movie posters at Mandarake nearby (bought posters for Belladonna of Sadness & Basic Instinct). Just a perfect spring night in Tokyo.

the 21st century romantic equivalent of love letters -- no more dm-ing, no more texting. Writing lengthy paragraphs about your week, about last night's moon, about all the emotions they make you feel (bonus: pdf attachments of your favorite articles and short stories)

One of the easiest and most fulfilling paths to joy when you live alone in your 20s is to invite over your friends for a dumpling dinner party 1. prep the filling right before friends arrive (pork, napa cabbage, scallions) 2. gather around a large table with dumpling wrappers, little saucers of water, and parchment-lined baking sheets 3. share what's on your mind, who you've been seeing, what you've been reading, etc. while you fold dumplings into crescent moons 4. cook dumplings (boil, steam, pan-fry) and serve with black vinegar, soy sauce, and chili oil 5. rejoice over warm bellies and precious human connection
