I had gotten this american made LL Bean barn jacket after years of looking for one. it's blanket lined, so I love it for early spring and late winter gardening, but I have needed to mend it for a long time. this weekend I went to a very cute mending workshop with friends, and it gave me the confidence to give mending the cuff of this jacket a shot. it's definitely messy, but wow, I feel so good having some something I've been meaning to take care of for so long.

I’ve been really into decorative mending this year and I’m trying to learn how to repair more of my clothes rather than buying replacements. My thusband got me a handheld darning loom. I’m going to get some thread and try patching up a shirt tomorrow.

A nice little venue hosts this once a month. People come with their clothes, help each other sew stuff, get a little cocktail. I thrifted this lovely cardigan 12+ years ago, and sadly 5 of 8 buttons had detached. I kept them for many years and tonight the piece was finally restored with some help from a pro-sewer (3 buttons) and my own efforts (2 buttons).

I know how to sew the most basic stuff, like fixing a hole in a pants pocket or stitching a button back onto an old shirt. Knowing how to do this is handy. But I liberally take my clothes to one of the local seamstresses: Mary or Anna. A lot of my clothes have gotten new life that way. Six dollars here, 10 bucks there. Highlight: an expensive down jacket had a ruined zipper. For $12 I got a new, sturdy, bronze-colored replacement. I've also been wanting to see if Anna can do some mods: combine two old sweaters, etc., add elbow patches, etc.

I've been trying the pomodoro technique to get started on a task. it helps if the task can be accomplished without computers e.g. paper, pencil, and a real kitchen timer. I set the timer for 25 minutes, and pledge to only do that task for that time. usually, once the time is up I'm in the flow state and I keep going until the task is complete. helps me a lot!
