Ever since I was like 8 I have been obsessed with the movie Xanadu. Itā€™s campy, itā€™s fun, it has Oliva Newton John, Gene Kelly and ELO. The sound track is no joke one of my favorite albums ever and I have probably listened to it hundreds of times at this point in my life. Itā€™s not a particularly great movie but I think itā€™s a good testament that sometimes things just speak to you not because of their objective goodness but because of your ability to see the beauty in it.

Peter Bogd. 1975 musical. Everyone hated this when it came out - people were busy taking 'ludes and participating in the counter culture and the man dropped a Cole Porter musical. Targets to this movie is a nonstop director run. Feels like a group of friends putting on a show and you're in on the bit. No one can really sing or dance. Love it.

I am a huge musical theatre nerd. This was the first movie I ever went to see alone at a movie theater. I was 14 years old and already a smoker, a Daniel Day Lewis die hard fan, and Marion Cotillard obsessed. I remember I watched on a weekday after school, still in my uniform. I was the only person in the room, it was like a 2pm screening on a Wednesday. I was so brokenhearted because of my first boyfriend and he happened to LOVE musicals as well, so I bought my ticket alone and it felt like a really big girl move, to go without him to see a movie I knew he wanted to see. I remember crying THE WHOLE MOVIE. Literally bawling my eyes out. I learned every song. Years later, I auditioned with a performance of ā€œTake It Allā€ for a Musical Theater Major I couldnā€™t sign up for because of money. Its weird because that song got me the scholarship (even tho I couldnā€™t go study, I did won the thing). That day, by myself, at the movies, is a day Iā€™ll remember forever.

I used to exclusively listen to musical theatre soundtracks & theatrical song cycle recordings. I barely listened to Anything Else.Ā  With that said I started to resent the version of me who liked that stuff. I thought it was uncool. Recently Iā€™ve found that I can indulge in what once meant a lot to me regardless of whether itā€™s seen as embarrassing. While my interests have shifted a lot over the years, the person who loved that stuff is still with me. And that can be really fun to look back on.Ā  So Iā€™ve linked a song from my favorite musical that makes me cry. <3Ā

My go to for just a simple one question is if you were a bird what bird would you be. Itā€™s really specific so it gives a clear topic to talk about but itā€™s still fun. Its also a good way to get to know someone by having them talk about themselves without putting them super on the spot. I think any question like this is more interesting than a ā€œwhat do you do?ā€

Recently Iā€™ve been obsessed with the movie 3 iron. itā€™s written and directed by Kim Ki-duk and itā€™s absolutely mesmerized me. Most of the film has no dialogue but when I was watching it at first I didnā€™t even notice. The emotion and suspense is entirely carried by the narrative and the acting. Itā€™s a movie that really captures my focus when I watch it and itā€™s definitely one that I like to rewatch to reanalyze what I think is going on. Romantic, eerie, kinda comforting 10/10.

Kind of a lie cause I did rewatch it once (when I was sick for some reason) and I cried so hard I couldnā€™t breathe. Beautiful movie, donā€™t regret seeing it and i probably will watch it again someday, when I have someone else to subject to the torture, but I think that day is far into my future. Itā€™s one of studio Ghibliā€™s best movies but its hard bringing yourself to watch something you know is so painful to see. When I watch it the moment I start crying I donā€™t stop till after itā€™s over.
