I love owning a drill and other tools. it’s so nice to be able to just get stuff done (when I eventually get myself together to do it). I bought my drill for $50 like 12 years ago and it came with a set of bits and it’s been useful ever since.
This week I installed a cat window seat and an indoor clothesline.
Other essential tools I use constantly - tape measure, box cutter, hammer
Tool I wish I had - pliers (I only have tiny beading ones), wire cutters, stud finder
Tool I don’t use but is fun - antique hand crank drill. I should use it.

For Christmas this year, Nicole bought me a beautiful woodworking bench (for those interested - Rockler beech wood bench), and I’ve been working to set that space up perfectly. That process for me began with acquiring the missing “basic” tools and giving them a home that keeps them easy to get but also out of the way. I found that, as someone who often prioritizes form and beauty, I’m drawn to a lot of used, vintage, and curated supplies. As an example, I use one of the old Stanley Powerlocks as a tape measure, and my go-to screwdriver is an old Wilde one kind of like this. For more of a “curated but new” feel I often find myself browsing Yuns, a cool little hardware shop that has a very focused small collection of reliable and high-value products. And finally — to provide the arsenal a resting place, I took my classic yellow dewalt hammer drill to the concrete and mounted a pegboard.

Everyone should own a decent drill but I feel like there may be a lot of drill-less people out there that might need to hear this. You need a drill. Everyone needs one. The question is, when drill situations happen, do you want to be caught drill-less? Do you want people to catch you and witness you in a drill situation as a person without a drill? Not a good look. Nobody can live without a drill. You either own one yourself or you’re a person who relies on another person’s drill. You gotta decide now what type of person you want to be and what message that sends to the people who may or may not be judging you off this…. the choice is yours.

Even if you have other creative pursuits that require your brain to work, it’s fun to have one that requires very little thought or attention. I started crocheting a couple years ago and it’s perfect while sitting in front of the TV or listening to a podcast or just zoning out. Makes me feel productive even as my brain melts out my ears, and makes me feel creative even when I’m not doing any cooler, more challenging projects that require more of my energy.
