I watched for the first time last night and I’m glad I bought it because I want to experience it again and again. I’m overall not a horror movie person, but this obviously is cinematic and haunting and intrigued me more than scared me. There were still certain parts that made me want to vomit (you can probably guess which ones), but they were necessary. I’m not tuned into the discourse happening around this film, but I hope that people are recognizing LRD’s performance as one that is award worthy. She did that all herself- no cgi, no prosthetics. I’m usually kind of a nepo baby hater but you can’t deny talent.

I described it as a gothic romance to my best friend. Don’t go in thinking horror movie and you end up with a haunting, moody film. Loved it so much, will def purchase!

Outside of Dune 2, this is my most anticipated this year. Eggers hasn't missed yet and I'm excited to see his remake. I'm fortunate to have seen a restoration of the original 1922 film (with an original live score by local artists) and I'm a fan of Dracula (which it illegally adapted lol), so I'm interested what choices Eggers will take for this remake. I really ought to watch Werner Herzog's version, too.

an emissary to the king of France becomes lost on his journey, and finds himself at the surreal estate of a vampire and his family, where he begins to experience strange happenings. I don’t really watch a lot of new movies but this is one I heard about recently and it sounded like exactly my kinda thing and I was not disappointed. it feels very very reminiscent of much older folk horror films, I absolutely loved this. the atmosphere is perfect, the writing is beautiful, and the main vampire is entirely done with puppetry which absolutely rules. based on a folk story that long predates dracula, a vourdalak is a vampire who feeds on the undead subject’s former loved ones. normally I find horror movies that are about “trauma” or whatever to be a bit tired, but this one heavily deals with those kinds of themes and it never feels heavy-handed or hacky. it’s a film about patriarchy and abuse but it’s also totally just a folksy atmospheric vampire period piece. I loved it. "My children. I am leaving. Wait for me six days. If after these six days, I have not returned, say a prayer in my memory — for then, I will have been killed in battle. But if ever, God forbid, I return after these six days have passed, I order you to forget that I was ever your father, and to deny me entry, whatever I may say or do, for then I would have become nothing but an accursed Vourdalak."

Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself? 🧪✨ Coralie Fargeat’s ‘The Substance’ was my most anticipated movie of the year. It’s neon, horror, cerebral, has 80’s vibes, and a synth driven soundtrack. Everything I could want in a movie. This movie eviscerated my brain in the best way possible. I left the theater wondering what in the world did I just experience, but knew I wanted more.  The themes of this movie hit home for me as someone who deals with the pressure of unrealistic beauty standards. Demi Moore gave her all to this movie and her performance blew me away. Margaret Qualley stole the scene every time she was on screen. Dennis Quaid plays a great sleaze ball. The actors understood the assignment. That being said, if you’re not a body horror fan, this will be a tough watch. I was definitely squirming in my seat 😅 It also ran a wee bit long for me but do I want to see this again in a packed theatre? Yes. The last movie that made me feel like this was Gaspar Noé’s Climax, and it does have a similar energy to it. Overall, this movie was pure madness but utter genius and I highly recommend you go into this movie with as little knowledge as possible.

This has become the norm and every day I grow more disturbed. I understand if somebody is behaving in a harmful way, that is good to document and put out there. But as a whole, it seems, we have become so comfortable with recording people just living their lives. I saw a video of a guy working and the caption of the video was that he was so hot, we needed to find him!!! Why are you providing the Internet with his face and location instead of just going up to talk to him? I saw another of two people on the subway, seemingly a couple, having a very emotional moment. How would you feel if you open up an app and saw a video like that of yourself? I don’t like this level of sibling society surveillance. Why are you videoing an elderly person with sad music dubbed over it to gain likes? It is WEIRD. Don’t even get me started on videos of children. It is WEIRD to use a stranger without their consent to get some kind of fake validation. Get a life. I don’t mean to come on here and share something so negative, I just don’t have anywhere else to put it and it’s gnawing at me.
