if one more person tells me to turn one of my hobbies into a business i'm gonna go berserk. is nothing sacred in this late stage capitalist hellscape?

the whole point of a hobby is so that it's fun 🙃

I never understood when people say “do what you love for work and never work a day in your life” because you will take all of the fun and joy out of that activity and will no longer have that hobby as an escape

It’s the fastest way of removing joy from something. Take something you love and now make it a form exploitation. Weird how that leaves you feeling icky.

Imagine reducing the joy you get from creating something to a dollar amount. I'll keep my 9-5. I don't ruin my love of anything to make money from it.

good for you if you are into that, but i enjoy making jewellery, designing press on nails and embroidering and sewing because its how I express my creativity and feel present. I don’t want to turn into a side hustle. why does everything have to be transactional and tied to consumption In order for it to be deemed valuable? I just want to make things for the sake of making things ya know?!

A side hustle, to me, is something monetized or you intend to monetize. And that puts it in danger of becoming joyless. I have hobbies. Mainly writing and photography. The fulfillment is in their practice.

Picking up a hobby that doesn’t revolve around content creation and documentation. it can still involve media consumption but documentation i believe stops my creativity and my will to continue freely dead in its tracks. And for what? so others will know?

this idea of "you don't owe anyone anything" came about through the social media therapists that try to diagnose complete strangers with a multitude of issues and complexes. all it has done has made selfish people more selfish and divided us as a community. you do not owe everyone everything, but if you consider yourself part of a community, a society, you do owe everyone something. at a base level you owe people kindness, respect (as long as they haven't lost the right to it), and basic human decency. you owe your loved ones even more. stop being selfish and rude in the name of treating your so-called "people pleasing."

oscar wilde said, "If you want to be a grocer, or a general, or a politician, or a judge, you will invariably become it; that is your punishment. If you never know what you want to be, if you live what some might call the dynamic life but what I will call the artistic life, if each day you are unsure of who you are and what you know you will never become anything, and that is your reward." i remind myself of this quote every time i get jealous of my friends who have it all figured out.
