my pride and joy. nothing better than acquiring movies solely because they have an awesome dvd cover and enjoying and cherishing them forever. going to a video store is one of my favourite ways to spend an afternoon. expensive hobby, but so are most drugs!

as both a movie and a physical media lover, starting a dvd/blue-ray/criterion collection and buying a blue-ray player was one of the best choices I've ever made. record stores, thrift stores, and other random places sell dvds of incredible movies for like 1 dollar each, so it makes it super easy to start a collection, and you have a physical watchlist to go through. I've also started buying criterion and I am in love with those, but they can be quite expensive so I do it sparingly, and only when there is a 50% sale which happens like 2-3 times a year. get off the streaming services and start watching your movies off a disc!!!

after playstation removed a bunch of videos that people had already purchased through their store i learnt that when you buy digital products, you're not really buying them, you're buying a licence to use them until they decide they want to stop licensing it out to you. so i've kind of got back into collecting physical media i saw in my local charity shop that CDs were 10p and i had a look and holy shiiiiiit i found some gold, Outkast, Lauryn Hill, Arrested Development, Bon Iver, Haim, loads of stuff - and i don't live in a particularly 'cool' place so was surprised to find them and i've already rec'ed this before but DVDs too, a place by me does 10 for 50p and even found fairly recent titles like the favourite, little women, etc. idk, i guess i might be romanticising having physical media but i love it

I’m not off streaming, but these are some things I do to feel the fun in movies/music again and diverge. I’ve always kinda been a CD supremacist and saved/kept buying them, it’s never too late to start, for any medium! - investing in some equipment like DVD, CD, cassette, etc players if you don’t have the old ones to dig out, or they’re too messed up. A decent DVD player is super inexpensive these days, avoid internet nostalgia up-sellers - going to any random thrift store, including the “bad ones”, and really going through their book/CD/DVD inventory THOROUGHLY. Pick up what looks interesting, it’s likely something you already have in your digital library will be there for cheap and to own forever. - patronizing remaining movie stores, they can be few and far between but the people who run them are usually very passionate about film. If you have one within a reasonable distance from you, it feels great to take a DVD back they recommended you or a familiar classic. Going to the movie store can be so fun and is something we’ve been deprived of since DVD’s decline. Same for music shops - exploring obsolete mediums, if you end up getting a VCR you can find tapes for super duper cheap and watch a lot of movies and expand your library fast! - movie or music or medium specific swaps if they’re in ur area, or trade with fellow enthusiasts anywhere you can find them, even online movie clubs
