a HIGHLY underseen movie at the moment, especially going into awards seasons where it's not getting all the love it deserves. If you can see it in a theater I highly recommend it, there are a few places still showing it, but I am pretty sure it should be available online too. So good, so moving, so important, it's one of the best directed movies of the year with such a compelling pov style. Absolutely adores this and have seen twice in theaters now, I recommend everyone get out there and see it so you can be mad when it inevitably and unfairly loses the only oscar its nominated for (insanity).

Truly the best movie released last year! Story points: Beautiful but heartbreaking film about the horrors of the jim crow south intertwined with snippets to remind you how recent all of that was. The final scene and a hug scene are the most difficult and heavy moments but i am obsessed with how emotional they are. Honestly, there’s no way you dont cry and feel anger towards what this country stands for by the end of watching this. Technical points: Performances were amazing, the sound really puts you into these scenes (the boxing scene is insane and the use of sound really elevates the weight of what is going on in that moment). Camera work and coloring were really unique and some have complained about it being confusing but i bet those ppl also thought Little Women (2019) time jumps were hard to follow (derogatory). Please rent this, need another project from everyone involved in this asap.

Bruh I am completely obsessed with this movie. You can find it on netflix. This is like KIDS meets Bridge to Terabithia but for grimey punk-Latinos with extra swag in their cup. Number one: their fucking style. I havent seen this much swag in a movie ever in my life. The music, the fashion, the dancing, the graffiti, the way they speak, the HAIR. Its just oozing and exploding with ineffable "i dont give a fuck" - ness. Literally no other thing ive ever seen can relate to the swag in this movie. There's just style everywhere. Your boyfriend (or girlfriend or nongenderconformingpartner) will never be this cool in their life. Number two: alt-mexican culture. I love mexican culture to begin with. I'm costa rican, and a lot of costa rican culture is influenced by mexican style music and way of dress, so immediately the classical influences resonate like catholic religious imagery and bright colors. On top of that, i am also Colombian and they are pulling and remixing Colombian cumbia but in a really special way. In monterrey mexico, colombian cumbia had such a deep impact on their community that they started calling themselves Kolombianos. Like an homage to the colombian culture that influenced their lives in music, fashion, and self expression. Additionally, they're pulling inspo from american cholo culture from like Houston and Cali. Baggy clothes, football jerseys, chuck taylors, bandanas. Its like a blend of so many different FLY cultures that melted together there in Monterrey, MX. puro simbolo star, loco. Number three: the story they tell. This movie highlights the experience of one young man as he experienced life at 17 years old. Without spoiling too much of the movie, we navigate themes of violence, immigration, societal outcasting, and a coming of age. Its truly a beautiful watch. Please watch this (twice). Thank god for punk-latinos.

older films rock, and i HIGH recommend Shadow of a Doubt, Alfred Hitchcock’s self proclaimed best work. A movie about the death of the american small town, familial abuse, divorce, and weird incestuous tensions. it’s one of the more tense films i’ve seen without really showing too much actual voilence. It’s all about power, control, and how people can be manipulated. Also I am a huge fan of Park Chan-Wook’s Stoker, and had no idea that was loosely based on this film. That movie rips too go watch it after they make a fantastic double feature.

as both a movie and a physical media lover, starting a dvd/blue-ray/criterion collection and buying a blue-ray player was one of the best choices I've ever made. record stores, thrift stores, and other random places sell dvds of incredible movies for like 1 dollar each, so it makes it super easy to start a collection, and you have a physical watchlist to go through. I've also started buying criterion and I am in love with those, but they can be quite expensive so I do it sparingly, and only when there is a 50% sale which happens like 2-3 times a year. get off the streaming services and start watching your movies off a disc!!!
