I was in your same position when I was younger & decided to take lessons: friend, it completely made me hate the idea of playing guitar. I wanted to rock and roll but they were having me learn hot cross buns. One day I put my guitar into its case and slid it back under my bed where it stayed for years. I only took it out again after some friends and I jokingly created a band, ironically. At that point there was no taskmaster other than my whimsy, so I learned what a power chord was and went bananas. With every goofy punk song we wrote, it seemed like Iโ€™d learn a new technique or chord to utilize and it was fun and exciting. After awhile I learned about tablature and how many people would notate the songs I loved, and so I used those to pick up new progressions and such. It was helpful because every now and again a song would deploy something I had never tried, but it was easy to learn when motivated by the song, ya know? Anyhow, thatโ€™s my two cents.

My grandma found an electric guitar in her brother's closet after his passing. He'd never learned to play. In fact, nobody in our family knows how to play. So the guitar ended up in my incompetent hands, first for the aesthetic, then for its actual purpose. I'm learning bit by bit. I'm absolutely terrible. And I love being absolutely terrible at something eight-year-old me always wanted to learn. She'd be proud.

yay to new hobbies! best thing is to try not to get ahead of yourself. start with basic songs with easy 4 chord progressions. get the hang of strumming, switching hand positions, etc. then you can start to level up to bar chords, tabs, finger-picking, and more! ultimate-guitar.com and youtube tutorials are especially useful in these stages. but be patient with yourself, and enjoy the time you spend with your mind entirely focused on the thing in your hands and not roaming elsewhere. what a treat:)

kevin atwater released his debut album last night and i couldn't be more enthused. beautiful guitar driven songs and immersive storytelling. i have cried so much today. i don't think i've ever related to a song in this way, let alone a whole album. the turmoil of the gay experience is so viscerally portrayed. listen to this album and catch him on his upcoming tour if you can. i hope you are well, friend.
