pi.fyi: a small, vibrant neighborhood filled with laid back people who acknowledge each other's presence and interact with one another tumblr: a cold, deserted town where the very few people remaining avoid eye contact or stay in their houses instagram: a big, gentrified, densely populated city full of billboards and noise pollution

Twitter: cyberpunk free market fascist hellscape. shady vendors whisper at you as you walk down neon streets as military drones scan from above

@EATGRAEPS full on dystopian. and everyone on the streets is cosplaying either a priest or a court jester. hate that place, i left it in 2015 and never look back

@EATGRAEPS I kinda love this so accurate except it’s actually a lot lamer

@EATGRAEPS honestly the whole cyberpunk cityscape thing is kinda lame on its own ignoring the blade runner franchise so it tracks hahaha

Emphasis on full of billboards for Instagram. Billboards, huge flashing LED signs, the works.

i def disagree with the tumblr characterization, it’s more like a weird convention or maybe a high school d&d club full of nerds. it’s still pretty active if you know where to look, but they mostly keep to themselves

@PAPERPENDRAGON agree to disagree. as much as i love tumblr, it just feels sad and empty to me now, because most of my mutuals are inactive. but it's true, people seem keep to themselves more there

@PAPERPENDRAGON (can't edit my previous comment, had to add) i totally get the convention / high school d&d club comparison, but that's only a niche part of tumblr that co-exists with other niches. there are tumblrs that feel more like an art gallery, a vintage shop, a movie theater, etc. that's why i compare it to a town. it's more than just a convention or a high school club.

my friend started a social media inspired by old forums from the early 2000s that has a similar vibe to perfectly imperfect while having a totally different approach. i like finding alternatives to instagram and mainstream social media that aren't flooded with ads and algorithms dictate what you see.

the internet used to feel messy and infinite, full of weirdos and subcultures and criminals and inexplicable little nerd projects from anonymous friends you made on message boards. then everything became twitter and instagram, which was cool until everything irl started looking and feeling like twitter and instagram too, no matter where in the world you were, and there was nowhere else to go. suddenly though (?) that era feels over, those sites are dying, along with google search, and I feel like the weird internet, the infinite internet, is at the beginning of a full comeback. I love that dizzy feeling that there’s so much much out there that I’ll never even get close to seeing it all. maybe that’s why I like it here so much?

In my mind, there is a difference. Social media is for creating content, broadcasting, audience-building, whereas social networks are more about connection, relationship, and community. — Content versus Conversation I'm less keen on social media. I don't need more media. And the media I'm finding on social platforms is going to be a lower, cheaper, dumber quality than what I'll probably encounter elsewhere. Thumbs down to more content. Thumbs up to people. I dream of a social network that's free from self-promo, ads, memes, asinine video, AI anything, look-at-me bravado. But maybe it's all social media. -- P.S. — PI.FYI is awesome.

last night i had a heart-to-heart with a friend/co-worker about our strained friendship. we’d been distancing ourselves from each other for the past year because of some misunderstandings. it made me sad for a while, especially since i was struggling with mental health, so losing a friend felt like a punch in the solar plexus. but then i came to terms with the possibility that we might never talk again, but this acceptance was not out of resentment, just the realization that some friends are not meant to be close friends.  but it all changed yesterday. we didn’t even plan to have that talk, it just came out organically during a casual chat after a long period of no real conversations, just the occasional forced small talk since we see each other at work all the time. this time we talked for hours, like we used to before our falling out, and eventually addressed the elephant in the room. we both realized that we had unknowingly done things that made each other feel unseen and hurt in the past, so we apologized and forgave each other. i’m really glad that we had a heart-to-heart where we could be honest about our feelings without being defensive or blaming each other. it was all about understanding one another, acknowledging our shortcomings, learning from our mistakes, and taking accountability for our actions.    having a heart-to-heart is special. navigating a conflict is uncomfortable, but it’s an opportunity for growth and deeper connection.
