I went through life never having a hobby but I found one last year, and it’s going on Speedboats. They are fun, fast and ridiculous.

last year i had wanted to do more side quests in my life (doing things that don't necessarily relate to who i am as a person but something cool i would like to add for the plot) but i didnt actually do anything. this year im trying to do it more seriously so im getting my boating license. do i have a boat? no. will i ever use the license? probably not. but is it a cool random thing to have? sure. do the side quest. do it for the plot.

I love seeing someone with a talent or something they’ve been working on or maybe an old neglected passion take their skill around the block for a spin. like watching a jazz artist play around with their guitar or Whitney Houston letting it rip or going as fast as you can on your bike. it can be anything. sketch book, cast iron pan, running shoes, dancing shoes, a new pen. let’s see what this baby can do

This is my number one hobby at the moment, before this I spent years trying something, being bad and immediately giving up. Last year I learned how to drive a manual (again) as an adult. Humbling! public embarrassment! bunny hopping, stalling, hill starts. But the whole time I was laughing and having the best time because I knew at some point I’d be able to do it. Now I don’t even think about it when I’m driving I’m just there to hoon around and change my little gears — then today I stalled it out of nowhere and I was like yeah! There it is! my favourite little reminder that you can learn things as an adult and it not be so horrific that you have to give up. It’s funny to be bad and it almost doesn’t last long enough. Bringing this energy into heaps of different things now — I love to be bad at playing basketball and playing bass and swimming.

Set in a hypothetical future where humans are immortal, Jared Leto plays the last living mortal at 118 years old who on his deathbed, and with a fading memory, tells a journalist his life story which starts to fragment and explore the paths his life could have taken based on decisions he could have made. It explores the multiverse hypothesis and I was always struck by the concept, and the line ‘until you make a choice, everything is possible’.

From Hong Kong, Wong Ping is an animator who explores desire, shame and morality in his surreal films that are at once naive and knowingly shocking. I discovered him first on NOWNESS through his short, ‘Doggy Love’, and was immediately entranced by the lo-fi, psychedelic pop animation and narration of a NSFW valentines love story.

Ulver originated as a black metal band in 1993 but defied the traditions of the scene by experimenting with genres and soundscapes to build a career which has taken them to the worlds of pop, ambient and jazz. Perdition City marked their exploration into ambient music, written as the soundtrack to an imaginary film. It's moody, introverted and atmospheric, and is the album that I reference the most. An underappreciated piece of art which I would love everyone to explore.
