While it takes time to finesse, it makes two cups of coffee and sits pretty on the counter.

My in-laws bought this for us, and it’s a really nice pot of coffee that does a bunch of stuff but honestly, the thing I most excited about is that I can schedule it to brew my coffee before I even wake up. I have a 3.5 year and almost 9 month old, so for the past almost 4 years of my life I have not gotten the quality or amount of sleep I would like. I drag myself out of bed in the mornings with them in tow and it is so lovely to not have to do that extra step for myself. I just pour that sweet, sweet liquid into a cute mug and get it started.

I made the mistake of getting addicted to caffeine as a sophomore in high school, and my jobs as a barista over the years has only exacerbated this dependency. Now if I skip a morning cup, I experience Phineas Gage levels of a headache. With this whole COVID-19 thing, I had to get good at making my own coffee at home, and while I love me some undiluted cold brew concentrate, I do not need to tell any New Englander it is about to get hella chilly out. For hot coffee needs, I had purchased a Moka Pot a few years ago because I thought it looked cool and loved that you did not need to always be buying filters or pods to keep using it. My cups kept coming out tasting muddy though, so the thing has been taking a sabbatical in the back of my cupboard for years. The other week, however, I fell down a James Hoffman YouTube hole and was inspired enough by his very informative Moka Pot video to bring my girl back out into the light. I used some shamefully old pre ground beans and this cool looking thing still managed to turn out one very strong, delicious cup of coffee that I would pay real dollars for.

Had a 3pm pour over iced coffee, with beans I had to grind by hand! mixed with simple syrup I made on the stove last night! Brewed with water I had to boil! nothing like sunday slowness <3

As an urban planner, I love maps. And, as someone casually fascinated by language/linguistic geography and sociolinguistics this is so interesting to me! I come back all the time as I’m exploring new neighborhoods. Done by the good people at the Endangered Language Alliance. Another fascinating project (and mapped in, like, HTML) is this interactive map done by an amateur linguistic geographer, North American English Dialects, Based on Pronunciation Patterns.

I like to entertain myself and one thing that has made me laugh is saying things like “sorry i am so effing late, I couldn’t find where the eff my keys were.” The nostalgia factor is so special and it just sounds a little silly. For extra laughs sometimes, I like to precede or follow with the disclaimer that “I am trying to curse less” because "curse" is a funny word too and the statement is blatently not true.
