seems like up till maybe 50 years ago if you knew the right guy with a printing press you could get some wild credit for being the first person to have a mostly normal thought. no matter how poorly you articulated it! sometimes it feels like the only sane thing to do is create your own critical framework....you are no less powerful than These Guys. they just made some of this stuff up

Isn’t half the fun in trying to read texts in ways that weren’t intended? I think reading “morally questionable” work is worth it just to excavate the fault lines of ideology. What logics underpin our world?

Personally, it is appalling to read some older works and see such blatantly misogynistic, racist, or otherwise ignorant themes. However, I don't think it is immoral to read these texts. It is important to remember that our current ideologies are conclusions reached after much trial and error. As much as it is uncomfortable to read, it is important to recognize that classic literature provides a snapshot of the ideologies/influences of the time. I would argue that it is imperative to remember how far we have come, and to view these texts for what they are and for what they could potentially propagate. That being said, there is some disgusting shit out there that I would much rather forget, but I think in a way that's important too. To be exposed to something, and to hate it so vigorously that you know you would not sit idly by were it to come into existence again, is a good thing.

so often i see folks in left-of-center spaces internalize the idea that they're "just a little guy." they make being the permanent opposition a core part of their self-image, and in their obsession with performing that opposition, they completely lose sight of the fact that the point of opposing the existing institutions and those who defend them is to replace them with our own institutions - ones that we will then be responsible for defending. no matter what your domain of interest is - media, academia, politics, technology, journalism, culture, or whatever else - it's simply not enough to spend all your time critiquing the dominant institutions, and it's also probably not necessary; most people already agree that they're shit. instead, you need to be spending that time and effort imagining what your alternative is going to look like, and how to make it more compelling, more durable, and more just than what we already have.

best friend and i were yapping about how important it is to actually be celibate for a while and maybe even not date for a bit when you're single instead of hooking up until you find a partner. it sucks for a little bit and you are really forced to confront your demons and then one day you forget about it. whatever floats your boat but i think it's probably good for the soul to be celibate here and there and focus on other shit. i'll go like a whole year like it's nobody's business

free entertainment and inspiration. the netherlands facilitates this especially well but you can do it in other places just fine a lot of the time. i love seeing the warmth of a stranger's home and their plants and weird lamps and maybe a cat. sometimes you get to watch people hang out with each other or share a hug
