it's been a week since i'm rid of it and tbh i don't really miss it; i just buy cd's from the charity shop and listen on my cd player when home. if i REALLY crave a certain song whilst out and about then i'll just go on youtube. so far it's nice to not have the decision paralysis of what music i want to listen to and i feel like i'm getting to experience music as more of a whole thing bc i can't just keep flicking between artists. and i'm not ashamed that i did enjoy coldplay's parachutes album on a soft and fading thursday evening!

i canceled my Spotify account over the summer and have spent the last few months rebuilding my digital music library on a refurbished iPod Touch. reading critiques of the app (and it’s enshittification), i realized i wasn’t even sure of my own musical tastes and preferences. i had stopped picking for myself, stopped seeking out new music, ceasing to know how to choose what i wanted or articulate what i like. breaking free from the algorithm has been such a joy! i’m borrowing gobs of music from the library, rebuilding my old playlists, and consuming more music than i have in years. and better yet, my data isn’t being tracked by Spotify and i own what’s in my personal library. further, my receptors are more open when i’m out in the world exposed to music, searching for recommendations in an organic way.

it's definitely far from perfect and has been in beta forever, but i've actually found myself using it everyday. choice paralysis and scrolling endlessly for the right song to listen to, just isn't conducive to music-listening. leave the decision-making to the playlist. wait—is this just a rec to listen to the radio…

I switched from spotify almost a year ago- it felt weird at first but I couldn't imagine going back. I buy myself 1 cd a month off bandcamp like a little treat- costs the same as a monthly spotify subscription AND now you get to own the physical media AND the original high quality wav files that the artist uploaded themselves. Spotify, Apple, and yt cut sound quality significantly and listening to the same albums on bandcamp feels like hearing it all for the first time. Also the artists actually get the money you pay, bandcamp only takes a very small portion. Ik not all artists are on bandcamp tho, so for that I'll go onto YouTube with an adblocker. Now i have a great cd collection and I never worry about ads

every year i make a new video to mark a theme that has defined the past year: this year it was all about addiction to the internet and subsequent feelings that time spent online takes me away from my sense of self !!!!

(london born and raised!) i don't live there anymore as found it too tiring of a city, but i lovedddd going for walks along the canal path. depending how long of a walk you fancy, you can start from anywhere really – but my fave spots are by haggerston station and victoria park, where you can head away from the canal to either explore the park or general bethnal green area :)
