Currently replaying this after beating it in a week over lockdown, forgot just how good it was. A 3d metroidvania horror game in a brutalist setting, video games literally do not get cooler than this!

Dark souls meets Studio Ghibli meets Zelda. Soulslike action adventure with isometric 3D top down animation. Recing again because I just 100%ed another run through and it’s still just the best game. Just one of the best games ever made. The controls are so slick and it feels so good to play. The animation is gorgeous and the story is entertaining without getting in the way of the game play. It’s challenging without being punishing and the QOL is so high and well thought out that it’s never overly frustrating even when repeating hard bits over and over. Clearly made my people who play games and understand what is needed to make them feel good.

From a “hobbyist” perspective, the natural conclusion of OSSC upscaling fetishism and a PS2 with a hard drive is getting to play this gorgeously freaky little game on original hardware without buying a price gouged £200+ disc copy. From a personal perspective, I think I’ve tripped and stumbled into prototyping a video game? Music isn’t speaking to me the way that it used to and I guess I’m looking for a more gag driven way to get my point across. Survival horror is such malleable language. So I’m deluding myself into considering this research. Playing it in tandem with Silent Hill 4 to get a nice spread of dream-logic nightmare realms that clash with domestic horror. I do so wish P.T. was still accessible. If anybody has any other suggestions or favourites in this category I’d love to hear them! Deliciously creepy stuff.

Seeking shelter in my catholic elementary school that has a cathedral inside the cathedral. Riding a Disneyland dark ride through every home I lived in as a kid. Driving down a highway that I understand to be inside of the Infinite Jest cover. Seeing a Tarantino movie about my friend in a theater that’s part-Pantheon part-hospital from Silent Hill 2. Usually nothing really happens, I’m just sitting or walking around watching everyone else exist. They almost always feel melancholic/stilted, but I really enjoy it! I try and draw them in my dreams note if I can remember once I wake up

Can (and often do) gush about these for hours. Katamari Damacy is the most fun work of art you will ever engage with, wears its pop art influences on its sleeves and we're all better for it. Bloodbourne turned me from a distant FromSoft admirer to a boots on the ground freak. I think about starting a NG+ run at least once a day (it's been a year since rolling credits!). Hollow Knight is the best metroidvania by a very wide margin, have never beaten the final boss over the span of 4 playthroughs because the idea of it ending is too sad. Gorogoa is the only puzzle game I've enjoyed with no caveats, really wonderful gameplay and style!
