Or better yet their sketchbooks if they’re available to the public. The early days tell better, accurate stories that include being shite for a time. Take this photobook from William Eggleston, it looks like someone’s A-level photography portfolio and yet this man became an ICON. Genius is a load of bs. Your faves practiced everyday.  Side note: go to your fave artists cv, scroll down to the first major thing and research.

i make things as a hobby, whether it be bits of music, awful drawings, writing, whatever, and i find that i work best after admiring others’ art. maybe it inspires me, maybe it’s just how things work in my head, but i feel that art, or any sort of creation, comes from creation, and so, it‘s ALRIGHT to use something else as a reference point, or rather, consume something before you create!! i like just sitting with something for a while, eventually something pops into my mind and gets my thoughts going. sitting with an instrument and messing around makes it easier to make something up, or scribbling makes it easier to think of what to draw. also, doing what’s best for you, whether that be taking ages to come up with an idea, and even longer to see it through, or making lots in a small amount of time. YOU do whatever is best for YOU, and probably your sanity. just generally loll have a lovely day slayyyy 💕

i am really passionate about going to my schools gallery crawl where all the undergrads exhibit their art. The work folks make range from uninformed, to simply bad, to copying other famous artists, or just trying to make it through art school. Genuinely, it’s inspiring to see people try stuff out, get halfway, play around, wrestle with a concept and fail (sometimes hilariously). and bitch it’s necessary! being audacious, playful and unafraid of failure, intrigued or exhausted, it’s all a part of making. being so scared to screw up makes u make no work at all. I made so so so much bad work in school and i presented it proudly. I wanna get back to failing spectacularly and doing it with a grin.

while this seems counterintuitive it’s something I’ve been trying to adopt this mindset into my practice lately since it presents great opportunities to learn and make Better Art. as someone who always Wants Perfection with their work (especially with the first go of things), making bad art has been something I’ve made a lot lately because I’ve been learning so many new things (like cyanotype and darkroom printing). fun fact: I actually have two cyano-totes. The first one has barely seen the light of day because it was a hot mess (aka I def did not rinse it enough). BUT without the first one I would not have made the second one that you guys showed so much love for!!!!!! *this was also a nice little reflection moment for me because I was very fed up last night in my darkroom class so thanks pi.fyi for making #reflect and remember it’s about progress not perfection*

I’ve had this youtube playlist for ages that I call my “internet archive” and it’s full of videos that I find interesting but also feel are culturally significant. They’re mostly live performances with a mix of odd ball clips that I liked but also really special stuff I think won‘t be there forever. Here is a list of my favourites 1. Camcorder footage of two guys driving around london in the late 90s while listening to the radio 2. RuPaul before he was the Queen of Drag, hanging round a corner shop in New York 3. A documentary filmmaker documenting various African American accents and dialects across the states. 4. A short doc called “Dirty Girls” about a group of teenager grunge girlies who are reacting to the news of Kurt Cobain’s death and discussing how they all stopped washing their hair to honour him hence the title. 5. Marsha P Johnson reading her poem “You gotta have soul” Anyway, this is me recommending to you to begin saving videos that intrigue you because contrary to popular belief the internet isn’t actually forever.

You won’t see photos of all the cast members that got the cut. Side note: imagining your life as a tv series is a great coping mechanism.

I really hate the way stuff we make gets lost in the internet void. I think people should constantly repost the stuff you do until you’re basically sick and bored of it. I got my work featured on a billboard in 2022. I will share that shit until I do something that tops it. Happy anniversary to the coolest thing that I have ever done.
