You always read about how musical masterpieces where panned or misunderstood or received middling reviews in their day but not BolĆ©ro - it was a sensation when it premiered and it still slaps. Incredible example of repetition, propulsion, building a heightened sense of anticipation with essentially one melody and rhythm throughout the entire piece. His works for piano are my favorite but I love this piece. I think this might be my favorite classical ā€œgreatest hitsā€.

Iā€™m talking romantic era circa 1870. rachmaninoff, tchaikovsky, sibelius, saint-saĆ«ns, and even later composers like scriabin and ravel. Iā€™ve recently been fixated on sibelius symphony no. 2 and ravel piano concerto in g (the second movement definitely being the most emotional). oh, and this is neoromantic but I canā€™t pass up an opportunity to recommend ennio morriconeā€™s compositions. I recently relistened to the guiseppe tornatore suite and itā€™s just wave after wave of bliss from the sonic landscape. I hate to be that pretentious classical music guy but I just really like talking about it lol.

For some reason this feels like the right context to plug this one. Composer; ethnographer; the pride of the Hungarian people. Kind of a modernist also kind of not. Nobody pays enough attention to BĆ©la. The indisputable classic is String Quartet No. 1 in A minor, shouts out to Max Beirne-Shafer for putting me on to the Julliard String Quartet recording of it from 1950. Great, pithy showcase of his harmonic genius is found in 14 Bagatelles, Op. 6 Sz. 38: No. 4, Grave. Apparently my grandfather studied with him back in the old country. Wild.

My go to for when I need to cook something but donā€™t want to cook anything. Fry up a diced onion in a pot till it starts to brown. Toss in a cup of lentils and add 3.5 cups of water. Season with a decent amount of salt, bring to a boil, cover and simmer for about 20. Then stir in 1/3 cup of rice, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the rice is cooked, the lentils are very tender and the whole thing has a porridge consistency, another 20-25 (but start looking out for doneness after 15). The lentils might stick at the bottom toward the end but thatā€™s fine; let it sit for a few minutes when itā€™s done cooking then scrape and stir in the lentils at the bottom. adjust salt, season with pepper and if you want, cumin, and stir in about 1/4 cup of good olive oil. Thereā€™s dinner. Sheā€™s done in an hour and most of it is hands off. Deceptively tasty and satisfying for how simple it is.
