When I was young we had rats in the winter because we live on acres of land. We had a recently new puppy who had a bunch of small toys (also was a rat killer). We were sitting at the dining table playing a game and I was rolling around what I thought was one of our dog's toys under the table. Turns out it was a dead rat, I have been deathly afraid of rats ever since then.

my apartment has a bit of a c*ckroach problem that maintenance is not very proactive about. i hate those sumbitches so much. it feels like my home is being invaded every time one of them crawls out from under the fridge. i employed raid spray on one such invader for the first time the other day and while i’m not typically someone with a proclivity for the morbid, i loved watching that creepy crawly critter die immediately. i didn‘t have to catch it, i didn‘t have to smoosh it, i just sprayed, *carrie bradshaw voice* AND JUST LIKE THAT, it went from insect to extinct. i was tempted to stake its head on a toothpick and place it in front of my door to warn other aspiring intruders like they did in the middle ages, but i’m hoping the smell of the spray will ward them off.

one time when i was 8, me and my older sister were chilling in my room when my radiator began to viciously shake and i heard a very loud guttural groaning sound from it. i remember freezing, processing what happened and running for the door - except it was locked FROM THE OUTSIDE. mind you, my door at the time was a sliding door and it could ONLY be locked from the outside since my dog liked to be devious whenever we left the house. in addition, it was a hook that had to be manually lifted and placed into a loop. anyways, i do live in like a 100 year old house but my radiator has not done that in the 12 years since that incident. but maybe i hallucinated it :)

I think a lot of fear is learned (noticing kids are often pretty chill with potato bugs and ants and etc) and am finding that exposure therapy, knowledge on how to identify the few dangerous species in my region, and mentally reframing things can do a lot for helping to become brave in ways that are kind. I think that genre of bravery may just be the most useful and cool. I’m at a point where I’m fine with a spider living in my home.

Whenever I am really sad or torn up honestly I let myself bask in it and look at sad quotes on twitter. Though, I always find going for a drive and just letting myself go and do whatever I want in my car or walks! I just love seeing the beauty of nature. Also anything tedious that is creative like hand sewing so I can focus on something else and usually my mind doesn't wander. Hope all gets better!
