sit in a circle, everyone has a piece of paper (and maybe everyone has a pen, or one pen that gets passed, and a surface to write on). the first person starts by writing a prompt - it can be simple, eg the name of a famous person, or a simple action, eg pumping gas, or it can be complicated, eg a famous person pumping gas and downing 5 fireball shots and vaping. they hand their piece of paper with the prompt to the person on their left, who then has to draw the prompt. they hand their drawing to the person on their left, who has to write down what they see. this repeats until it gets back to the person who wrote the original prompt, who reveals what they wrote and shows the group how itā€™s changed around the circle. itā€™s best with 6+ people, and great for all ages (as long as they can read and draw). one time i was playing with a group of my cousins and one cousin wrote ā€œwhy am i here?ā€ and we all had to go around and write then draw ā€œwhy is (x) here?ā€ and we all knew what it was because it was clear she didnā€™t really know or like us. we kept making her play games with us until she liked us more and 15 years later weā€™re going to her wedding this week so letā€™s just say this game changes lives and brings families closer?

Fishbowl is a classic parlor game where everyone writes down a few prompts on papers and mixes them up in a bowl. There are three rounds: 1) Taboo, try to get your team (or group) to guess the prompt without saying it 2) charades 3) players get a single, one word clue is used to get team members to guess the phrase/word on the paper. This game can be played different ways, but I typically like to split the group into two teams. Each team gets a minute to get as many cards as possible, then the other team gets a minute. The person who draws from the bowl changes with every swap of the teamā€™s turn. Each correctly guessed prompt is a point. This continues until all the slips of paper are gone from the bowl. At the end of each round, all the prompts are put back in the bowl so that all players are already kind of familiar with these phrases going into a new round. And the team with the most points/cards at the end of all the rounds wins! This game has definitely created some interesting, new vernacular for my friend group, as the prompts can be literally anything. Plus, itā€™s very easy to learn/teach and only requires items found around your house.

me and my friends play ā€œwhatā€™s in my bag?ā€ at restaurants as a silly way to pass time. must have bag, preferably with multiple compartments We also play a game where we all try to rapid fire say the same word. So we all stand around in a circle, someone counts down, and then everyone says a word and then you look hard into each othersā€™ eyes and say things like ā€œI think weā€™re all on the same pageā€ and ā€œweā€™ve got it this timeā€œ and then keep saying words until you all say the same one word. Sounds incredibly stupid but is amazingly fun. I recommend doing this outdoors with 3+ people. does this make sense??

10/10 road trip game 1 person (letā€™s call them the thinker; you need at least 3 ppl total to play) thinks of a word. donā€™t tell anyone! they say the first letter of the word. the rest of the players (the guessers) start thinking of words that begin with that letter. when someone thinks of one, they give a hint that will hopefully make at least one other guesser think of the same word. letā€™s say the first letter is ā€˜dā€™. Guesser 1 would say something like ā€œIā€™m thinking of a countryā€¦.ā€ if another guesser can think of a country that starts with ā€˜dā€™, they say ā€œCONTACT!ā€ and count down 3-2-1. if both guessers say the same word at the same time, the thinker owes them another letter. the twist is that the thinker can also guess at words, and if they correctly say the word before the guessers can, they donā€™t owe a letter. so the thinker could say ā€œitā€™s not Denmarkā€ before the two guessers say it, and they donā€™t owe a letter. really fun bc it makes you rely on in-jokes and stuff to try to avoid giving generic clues the thinker can get.

i visited a friend and she suggested we get a slice of cake from her favorite bakery, and it felt incredibly cool in an aspirational ina or martha way. i think this should be somewhat mom and pop, and wow wouldnā€™t it be great if it were your little secret youā€™re sharing. i guess iā€™m saying no milk bar. would actually be more impressed with a really good grocery store cake, such as the attached safeway red velvet that is only good in slice form and not the whole cake because itā€™s made differently despite what multiple bakers have said. i havenā€™t actually landed on my favorite local cake, but itā€™s absolutely a goal and would be such a good look. all that saidā€¦ if you have a favorite cake please share

might be old news but canā€™t overstate how much this makes me feel calmer and more organized. instead of having stuff/decor/pill bottles/trash all over the table, throw a tray on there and push all that stuff on the tray it will feel so much less cluttered and fancy. can be cheap! can be an old serving platter! bonus points if it contrasts with the surface nicely.
