This is me expressing my distaste for modern communication. I am longing, no, YEARNING to write letters. To anyone really - friends, romantic interests, family - all of the above. Why on godā€™s green earth are we not taking advantage of such an artful and intentional means of communicating with one another. Boo tomato tomato, we all failed the test. I hate texting. Let me send you stickers and love notes. What is wrong will us all!!?

Physical letters aren't just for corny love notes and eviction notices! They can be a really good way of communicating things that are too long for texting but too personal to say aloud. I feel like the convenience of texting can be deceptively dishonest, itā€™s often more genuine to let something bleed out on a page. It also just feels cool as fuck to write one, I like to imagine Iā€™m some aristocrat main character in a period piece. Maybe light a candle if you want to be extra pretentious.

This one is kind of a ā€œno shitā€ because people have sent letters for like centuries but I think right now at least in America itā€™s seen as a novelty. itā€™s so hard to take true time to myself - time that isnā€™t work or browsing Reddit or fucking around on iPhone or playing video games but time to sitting down to hand write a letter to a dear loved one makes me consider what is true and what is rotten in my life. The ā€œformā€œ of letter with like a start middle and end and meandering along the way is hard to express in other forms. Like are you gonna text your mom all that shit?

If I haven't spoken to my friend in at least three months, I start to ask if they want to send letters. If you don't communicate for months or years, you might as well send letters: they're practically just as fast but with depth and physicality! Who doesn't love some paper treasures! Plus, it provides a Victorian-drama level of yearning in waiting to continue a conversation. There is nothing I have savored more than checking for a reply after sending a letter. I open my mailbox every Sunday. I am aware of this error in logic, but I love it every time I do it. I am a child again, and I am joyfully impatient. Not only is it mail, but it's mail from a friend: the best kind.

You will surprise yourself and you will connect with the coolest groups of people. Donā€™t let imposter syndrome or rejection stop you. Get rejected one hundred times. Itā€™s worth it for the times youā€™ll be seen and accepted and supported. And you get to support others while youā€™re at it.
