if you’re ever stuck, just write anything. If the lines don’t make sense together, that’s great. If it sounds nothing like what you’d normally write, great! If it’s not very good, great. just see where your fingers fall on the guitar or piano, or where your wandering mind takes the melody and lyrics and finish whatever crap you’ve just come up with. Finish it in 20 minutes knowing you might not show it to anyone. Sometimes you might end up finding a cool melody, lines or chord sequence that you fuck with, sometimes you won’t. But working from something’s better than nothing. You could sample it, repurpose it, trash it but you’ve got something tangible in front of you.

you've just got to write freely without a purpose or without an end goal just start writing and see where you end up, even share stuff here if it doesn't 'fit' anywhere else, it's just gonna get the muscle moving and then you'll have tonnes of stuff to look back and work from when you've got something specific you want or need to write

This is really the worst, but I find that if I just sit down and force myself to do it, I always come up with something that I can at very least use as an outline. i write music, so even just banging out a melody or a chord progression and working off of that usually gets me somewhere and inspired. Also digesting outside content of what you are trying to create. Seeing live music always makes me want to bust out my guitar 😎 🎸 good luck!

I write lyrics/poems/prose/essays/the occasional substack/text based art/performance art and the most successful process I've found works for me is just 'hold a pen and hope that it happens'. I can't get any real ideas done on a laptop (my substacks are all drafted in bullet points by hand first). I don't write every day because I don't have the energy or time or enough that is important to say. I only write when I really get the urge in my fingertips and then I get my notebook and just open the page and get whatever out I can. Sometimes it's an idea I've been mulling over that finally comes out and others it's just nonsense sentences that eventually form something. Basically my advice if you're struggling to get started is just whenever you think you want to do it, just hold a pen and a blank piece of paper and just do it. Maybe it'll be brilliant from the off. First lines are hard so don't worry about it if it's not, fourth lines are where it gets good. I definitely produce 70/30 shit/good writing and that's okay because who's reading it?? Also sometimes you go back a few months later and realise that what you thought was terrible was actually great all along it just needed a different context!
