DITCH SPOTIFY WRAPPED

I try not to be a hater but honestly this shit is getting on my nerves! I see the same five artists on almost everyone's top five. Nothing wrong with mainstream, but if there's a point to all of this exhibitionism it's probably be to find new music that you might not discover on your own (though that's contradictory to the algorithm... which is a different conversation altogether). Not even to mention that less and less people are using Spotify, which is likely for the best. Instead of posting your Spotify wrapped this year rant about some music that you've really been loving. Maybe it's under the radar, maybe it's not; so long as you love it spread the joy. (in no particular order) * Vampire Weekend - Only God Was Above Us (standout track: classical) So fucking good, feels like summer, feels like NY, weird and wonderful * St. Vincent - All Born Screaming (standout track: big time nothing) She only gets better - a return to form and new at the same time * Salami Rose Jones & Flanafi - Sarah (standout track: the severity) If you like your music weird - this is the one. Sometimes calm, sometimes crazy, underrated..... i will continuously shout this out * Declan McKenna - What Happened to the Beach? (standout track: elevator hum) A lot of tracks feel like your floating - good lyrics, infectious grooves * Saya Gray - QWERTY II (standout track: AA BOQUET FOR YOUR 180 FACE) Saw this live - wild. Whole discography goes crazy and every release is a curveball - most exciting artist right now * Loukeman - Sd-2 (standout track: Baby You're a Star) Shoutout Blenum putting me on this... amazing production, cool blend of acoustic and electronic.... cool deffo illegal sampling * Charli XCX - Brat (standout track: Sympathy is a Knife) .... it's Brat

Unwound

I will fail to explain just how much this band meant to me in the 90s. So I will borrow from AV Club who did a fine job of distilling it: “Unwound is the best band of the ’90s. Not just because of how prolific, consistent, and uncompromising it was, but because of how perfectly Unwound nested in a unique space between some of the most vital forms of music that decade: punk, post-rock, indie rock, post-hardcore, slow-core, and experimental noise. That jumble of subgenres doesn’t say much; in fact, it falls far short of what Unwound truly synthesized and stood for. Unwound stood for Unwound. But in a decade where most bands were either stridently earnest or stridently ironic, Unwound wasn’t stridently anything. It was only itself. In one sense Unwound was the quietest band of the ’90s, skulking around like a nerdy terror cell. In another sense it was the loudest, sculpting raw noise into contorted visions of inner turmoil and frustration.” R.I.P. Vern Rumsey. This is their finest song, from their finest album. I really can’t say enough about the sheer bloody minded genius of this group. 🖤
