HOWEVER, I am also a big fan of renegade gifting. the most treasured items Iâve ever received as gifts are things that Iâd never buy for myself (and therefore would never ask for) but are things the gift giver associates with me.
my mom gave me a calmansi tree one Christmas to remind me of my childhood in the Philippines. one of my bffs got me a handmade leather journal with the last sentence of my thesis stamped in the cover when I graduated. my ex got me pottery classes at a local studio and handmade a fun gift certificate for my last birthday.
I love to give books bc thatâs what Iâm passionate about, and it can be a fun way to mix my personality with the receiver. the best part about receiving a gift is feeling truly seen by the person

Even of its corny, even if your professor doesnât end up displaying or using what you get, I think itâs a lovely idea to get something tied to books or authors she loves. At the end of the day, the item itself isnât significantâitâs a token of how meaningful the relationship has been, and what youâve learned from her.
Think about the gifts youâve been given. Imagine one relative gave you a really nice sweater, something classy but a little generic. Another gives you a painting of your pet. Which are you more excited about?

gift giving is such a classy thing imo and itâs so so good when you get it right.
for people Iâve known for a long time I keep a running list in my notes app with things I know they will like. If you donât know, ask someone who is close with them. Give them a list of options and make them help you narrow it down.
Good general categories for when youâre just not sure are:
- books (ask someone what they like)
- kitchen items (find out whether theyâre a baker, a cake person, a bread person, etc)
- outdoorsy shit if theyâre outdoorsy (multi tools, portable cooking equipment etc)
- cute boxes or bags (if the thing is cheap or practical but boring you can give it that wow factor by putting it inside something else)
Finally, if you have no idea what to get someone, most people will appreciate a really nice jar of small-batch jam or honey. Or movie vouchers.

May it be physical media, scary little dolls, cute plushies, rare coins, shoes, etc.
Itâs easier for your friends to find you a present or at least something thatâs related to your fixations. :) also itâs fun!
Additional rec: if youâre doing the gifting, include something personal, something that you handcraft, something that will take you at least 1-2 hours to make. A pop-up card, cute origamis, a collage, maybe even just a heartfelt letter. Maybe they like frogs? Draw a couple of frogs around the edges on the letter/card. Or some cute stickers that you know theyâll like. Doing so says, âI was thinking of you the whole time I made this. This is for you and you only. You are important to me and I have a lot of time on my hands to curate something for you because I love you!â <3
