If you can withstand the occasional slur thrown your way by a teammate when your molotov just misses its mark by a couple feet, this is an incredibly rewarding strategic shooter that is super fun at the casual level - just don’t take it too seriously. It’s an iconic game for a reason and worth checking out for its historical/cultural significance alone. It has retained its idiosyncratic features from an earlier age of computer gaming that makes it feel like a fresh change of pace from the slew of twitchy, bombastic, movement based games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, etc. For example, you have to stop moving to shoot accurately, there’s no sprint, slide, or dive, you have to put your gun away in order to throw a grenade. It’s slower, more intentional- and as such, it’s really able to dig into your mind. I would recommend finding a friend who has played this game for years to help show you the ropes - there’s a high learning curve to start with, but overcoming each obstacle feels really substantive, like learning a new language.

Journey, one of my favorite games. I mostly play fps games and prefer games that are extremely competitive. yet the serine and angelic experience that is Journey puts it over the top. I strongly recommend this game, it’s only around 45 minutes. But every minute is precious. (perspective: I have over 5000 hours on CS:GO/CS2 and would never recommend someone play that pile of trash)

Even though I do also play it with friends, I feel like they are great for feeling included even when playing alone. Since teams are split into 4 or 5 player squads, if you get a squad that sticks together it is a wonderful experience, having strangers watching your back and charging into action with them. You work a lot outside of your squad too, as there’s 4 distinct classes which all provide something important to the team These days they’re super cheap on sale too! The last couple weren’t as good as the ones before, but if you haven’t played a game before you might still enjoy them. Though my favourite is Battlefield 1, which still has active servers despite being 8+ years old.

I joined the internet at the advent of formal social media so chatrooms and forums were never really a thing I participated in. Still, I would watch my older sister in AIM chatrooms and try to wrap my head around the appeal, the way she would sit around for hours watching texts appear from, to me, indecipherable usernames. The experience of Webfishing, I have to imagine, is akin to what my sister felt bullshitting away hours of the night as her soulja-boy-ing stick figure gif looped ad infinitum. In webfishing, you inhabit a little cat or dog avatar (even more with expanded species mods which are dumb easy to install - I play as a little bunny boy) and sit around, cast your line in hopes of catching rare and valuable aquatic life. All underscored by the incessant chatter of 11 other players textually shooting the shit, cracking jokes, role playing, etc. It’s a portal into the world of queer and trans youth, furries, weebs, and folks who just like digital fishing mini-games. You can start a convo, get real with strangers, catch some fish, drink a digital beer, unlock swag for your avatar, and enjoy the vibe. Highly Recommend.

Let me preface that I am not religious and I am not trying to promote the catholic church - respect to the oppressed peoples in Ireland and the Philippines etc. who do rock with catholicism, but I’m not here to defend it. That said, it is neat to recite a cool prayer you learned in catholic school - it hearkens to a time when people would just memorize poetry for fun. Here’s one that I used to recite whenever I was afraid: St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May god rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Bars.
