I’m determined to use my phone about 90% less in the new year. I’ve replaced IG with Pi.Fyi & now I’m using an ipod for all of my music!!! There’s something so sacred about the process of curating the music that actually takes so much time. You have to buy or download the music (which, buying on itunes has felt like a supportive option for the musicians I admire. $10 bucks for one of my favorite albums. down.) Then you drag it onto your ipod. Watch the “Synchronizing” wheel on your ipod. Eject the Ipod. Go to Cover Flow to see your albums lined up. It’s amazing, and it requires effort and time. Versus on spotify, you just press the plus button and pay the monthly 9.99. Its so wild. What music do I actually like/need to get through my days? I’ve let the machine of algorithms and apps decide. I literally was stumped trying to think of what music I HAD to have. I want my life to feel more intentional in every way. I want to be extremely present. But, that can feel like so much pressure and overwhelming. This is such a fun refreshing start. GO GET ONE!!! đŸŽ”đŸŽ¶đŸŽ§

I modded a few old iPods (classics and minis are super easy to upgrade with bigger batteries and storage - if you've a broken one around, they're super easy to fix even if you know nothing about electronics) but I have a soft spot for these Nanos. cover flow was absolute peak.

i canceled my Spotify account over the summer and have spent the last few months rebuilding my digital music library on a refurbished iPod Touch. reading critiques of the app (and it’s enshittification), i realized i wasn’t even sure of my own musical tastes and preferences. i had stopped picking for myself, stopped seeking out new music, ceasing to know how to choose what i wanted or articulate what i like. breaking free from the algorithm has been such a joy! i’m borrowing gobs of music from the library, rebuilding my old playlists, and consuming more music than i have in years. and better yet, my data isn’t being tracked by Spotify and i own what’s in my personal library. further, my receptors are more open when i’m out in the world exposed to music, searching for recommendations in an organic way.

I mean, if you own an iPhone, there’s no fucking reason to use Spotify. Let me explain: On the Spotify front: - Spotify pays LESS to artists. Whether they‘re Taylor Swift or someone with 10 Monthly Listeners, they pay a MUCH LOWER rate than any other streaming platform - Spotify is also just a platform to flex with fame and notoriety: you can see how many plays, how many monthly listeners, how many followers each artist has. You can even buy merch and tour tickets (that’s kind of the only cool thing they got going on rn tbh) - Spotify doesn’t roll out their Organic Promo Features to all artists. Again, if you are Taylor Swift, you’ll get all the perks, but if you’re just starting you won’t be able to do shit besides having your music there. Ex. indie artists don’t have access to Countdowns, Clips, Paid Promo Tools, etc. - Since last month, Spotify passed a rule in their company to NOT PAY ARTISTS WITH SONGS WITH LESS THAN 1000 STREAMS. This is BULLSHIT. And adding to that, you CANT SEE DATA from less than 1K played content now: since they’re not paying you, you can’t know how your music is doing. Which again, is BULLSHIT. - The playlists are all over the place, tainted by modern day Payola (Submit hub, Groover and such) and editorial playlists ran by RANDOM ASS PEOPLE that do not make music or know about music at all. They work on a “Vibes” basis for their editorial playlists, which suck because that’s the only way to grow in the platform as an emergent artist. - They advertise A LOT: it doesn’t matter if you have premium, that weird random song/artists that you got suggested, well, they PAID for that. - Talking about advertising your music on Spotify: you CANT advertise unless you have 1K monthly listeners already. And when you have them and advertise from your Spotify for Artists account, those campaigns have probably THE WORST OUTCOME I’ve ever seen in years working with online and social media advertising. It’s SO FUCKING EXPENSIVE AND DOESNT DO SHIT FOR YOUR ARTIST CAREER or exposure. - Spotify does this thing called “Normalization” which is basically further compressing the songs that are already mastered by the artist. In English, they have a threshold to fulfill and they will get the volume of your song to the levels they’re looking for to have in the platform, NOT YOUR MASTER and the decitions artists made when post producing their songs. - Also, their interface is ugly af. Hate the green and black. On the Apple Music front: - If you own an iPhone, it literally just makes sense to pay for AppleOne and have Music, AppleTV+ and your iCloud all in one bill. Money wise, it make sense. - I LOVE the fact that AppleMusic DOESN’T SHOW NUMBERS BECAUSE IT’S A MUSIC LIBRARY, NOT THE BILLBOARD CHARTS. If I want to know how many plays did any song/EP/album/artists has, I will see the charts, not my own music library. Because mainly I don’t listen/search for music because of the amount of times they’ve been played. - Audio Quality: if you have a good Soundsystem at home, or good quality headphones or any of the Apple earphones/headphones it’s just plain better. - It works with Siri!!!! My girl knows me, she knows what I listen to. I have a HomePod Mini and it’s the best thing because I just ask for a song/artist/vibe/radio/playlist and she’ll do it for me. This also works on my Airpods while I’m walking. - The interface is cute and the animations, lyrics and bios are fucking cool and not ugly - They pay a HIGHER RATE per song than Spotify. I’ve noticed the HUGE difference when Spotify payed my $2 for what AppleMusic paid my $12 - Playlists and suggestions are linked to your phone use so, it will be better than Spotify no matter what. - Zane Lowe!!!!! So yeah, thats my lengthy recommendation for today.

i refused to use streaming services at all for a long time because i wanted a sense of ownership over my music library (even if in a nebulous digital kinda way) & i would say it’s great for so many reasons , it’s slightly more inconvenient but it’s honestly pretty easy to just download music from bandcamp/rip from cds/torrenting sites & manually put it into your phone from itunes. you get to think a bit more about what you’re putting in your library (or from your library into your phone) but you also get to hold onto things in a certain version & protect your archive from the whims of streaming services & copyright claims .

My friend today asked me an amazing question. He said, “Do you think the avoidance thing is specific to our generation or LA specific? Like is someone in Arkansas thinking about anxiety?” Obviously yes someone in Arkansas is thinking of anxiety haha but it made me really think. Our generation is HORRIBLE (me included) at facing shit and taking accountability. It’s all masked underneath this ”therapy talk” shit. Hear me out. Let’s say you have a friend and you’re feeling conflict/tension with them. After a few weeks of them being mean, you confront them about it. They’re passive and not addressing their actions. We would INSTANTLY write them off as “AVOIDANT” versus “A friend who’s hurting me by being shitty even if they don’t intend to.” And yes, that friend is being “avoidant”. But, that’s a simple write off for behavior. Behavior has been so quickly written off to fit into this Therapy Talk. Here’s another example: A girl who really likes someone is attaching to them quickly because she’s excited to get to know them and is having so much fun, she’s moving faster than usually and trying to rush commitment. Society would consider her “Anxiously attached” versus “This girl is really into this person and it’s shifting her choices and actions.“ I think what i’m getting at is, it seems dismissive and avoidant to just simplify these big feelings and actions into these terms when in reality, yes the terms are true. But, we should probably be making space to really talk and express in full detail a persons actions including our own, and get to the bottom of it. The categories can be apart of the larger narrative, but they arent the full reasoning. I hope this made sense lol
