It took a realllllllly long time for me to get on board with magnesium. I thought it was overrated. (Generally I donā€™t understand supplements. Iā€™m more of a eat-the-foods-that have-the-vitamins-and-minerals-you-need type of girl.) But this magnesium is IT. First of all, you mix it with water and it fizzes which is really satisfying. Secondly, it tastes great. Like bitter, slightly stale seltzer? In a good way, I promise. Some people like to add tart cherry juice to the mixture because apparently tart cherry juice is a good source of melatonin? But not me. I like it AU NATUREL.Ā

Good news and bad news. Bad news is that Iā€™m not good at restful sleep, but the good news is I have a very active dream life. Iā€™ve always experienced a lot of deja vu and stuff, but the last several years have gotten weird. More and more of it has been coming back to this side of consciousness with me, and Iā€™m becoming more capable of navigating my dreamsā€¦ Anyway. Itā€™s hard to get to sleep and harder to stay asleep. This powder is effervescent in cold or warm water, and the specific fizzy tartness triggers that pavlovian ā€œwinding down for bedtimeā€ yawn in our home.. Magnesium tenderly tells my nervous system to be cool and let me rest, so for the first half of the night Iā€™m resting sound asleep and when I wake up, it is not with my heart racing with anxiety, which allows me to slip back under into a dream state where Iā€™m shaping the architecture and my autonomy from first person. I have this Oura ring which tracks my sleepā€” my heart rate, temperature, how many times I wake up, how much time Iā€™m spending in REM versus deep sleepā€” and Iā€™m obsessed with that. Wait make this about Oura not Magnesium. Wait make it about sleep in general. donā€˜t make it about dreams you ainā€™t ready to know about that. But yeah Iā€™ve been putting magnesium in my water.

I donā€™t understand why we refrigerate eggs. The internet says itā€™s because they last longer. But if youā€™re a big egg eater like me, you are definitely going to eat your eggs before they go bad. I like the way cracking a room temperature egg feels more than a fridge one. Also I believe that boiling an egg for 6 minutes is the perfect about of time (water is already boiling when you put egg in). Iā€™m not sure if it would still be 6 minutes if the egg was coming from the fridge.Ā  Keeping butter out in a tray is better than keeping it all cold in the fridge. Itā€™s easier to spread on toast and is generally nicer to look at.Ā  Water should always be room temperature. Not cold. It hurts my teeth and makes my insides chilly just thinking about cold water. And no ice. Ever.Ā

Audre Lordeā€™s autobiography (actually, she labels it a biomythography) has been my favorite read of the year so far. My best friend, Zoe, recommended it to me on vacation this summer. It is mesmerizing to read about Audre, who is wise beyond her years, coming of age in New York City during the 1930s and 40s.I also highly recommend reading the same books as your friends and exchanging after. Itā€™s like rediscovering the book through someone elseā€™s eyes.Ā
