its my favorite album of all time. by the time he made in utero, he had already defined his style and really settled into his sound thru bleach and nevermind, but what makes this album the best of nirvana is his return to the punk roots that brought him to the scene to begin with.

this record is from 1996 and captures that era so perfectly. it definitely exists in the grunge zone but i think it’s kind of its own weird thing. the harmonies and energy instantly evoke the intimacy of the mtv unplugged performances of nirvana and alice in chains. though its less massive sounding than either of those bands studio records, theres a rawness in these recordings that i love

Ten by Pearl Jam is one of my all time favorite classic/hard rock slash grunge albums. Hole’s album Live Through This is more of a melodic grunge/alternative rock, but a solid female vocal album. I feel like it never really got all the flowers it deserved because it was a female vocalist at the same time. I just ignore the fact that it’s Courtney Love lol. I’ve said this in a rec before and I’ll say it again: I will listen to ANYTHING that Chris Cornell worked on lol. He was a part of a few 90s grungy bands, so if you haven’t already definitely check out Soundgarden, Audioslave, and/or Temple of the Dog. Superunknown by Soundgarden is probably one of the best known. Some are popular enough, but ones I feel were all pretty quintessential 90s albums that were a great part of the sound.

3 out of 5 stars (RS was notorious for hilariously ice cold takes on albums that didn't age well and then they'd have to come back and revise their POV later). Ira Robbins at the time: "Too often, underground bands squander their spunk on records they're not ready to make, then burn out their energy and inspiration with uphill touring." Something as fresh and status quo-bashing as "Nevermind" was bound to piss a few people off. Here's their second attempt in 1994, LOL: "At last, high school portrayed as the pep rally in hell that it is. Millions of pos-deducation-stress-disorder survivors immediately identified. The rest of the album is a relentless run of monster riffs and monstrous imagery, all punched along by arguably the greatest rock rhythm section since Led Zeppelin." (PS: RS also hated Led Zeppelin. I used to write for RS. There were bad takes in every single issue of that mag. I blame co-founder Jann Wenner, known dickhead, bootlicking industry toady and misogynist).

i understand ur struggle, and its a very real thing to feel as though you have no identity in a capitalistic society that "sells" you your personality and interests. the best thing i reccommend you do is to unlearn that behavior first. unlearn to rely on items as a means of self expression. yes ofc fashion and makeup are great ways to express who you are (things that i love and partake in) but its important to recognize that this is a behavior we are taught; you buy something in the hopes it will achieve something, like how we buy band tees even tho we're total posers because we want to seem cooler than we really are. to live authentically and to discover who you really are as a person, you need to question WHO you are. what are your values? what are your thoughts on life? how do you feel about your existence? our life on this earth is limited and this is something everyone, regardless of religion, can agree on. instead of trying to find your identity thru what you can purchase, try to find it by questioning what it is you want from life. eventually, you will find that as you explore your values, morals, and desires you will naturally gravitate towards things that fulfill that. for example, i have a personal interest in human health and biology and i explored this interest by learning about nutrition. now, i love to cook and i love to make my own recipes. finding yourself shouldnt feel like a task that needs to get done. its more so something you do for the rest of your life, even as u die. to live is not "to find yourself", but rather to live a life that feels fulfilling. hope this helped!
