i just watched the man who fell to earth (1976) starring david bowie yesterday (in honor of the king's birthday) and it was so wonderfully strange. i don't think i could even relay the plot to you effectively outside of the fact that it's about aliens, but the cinematography was beautiful and, above all, it was cast perfectly. not a single person in this film could be considered a good actor, but that's what made it great! david bowie was an absolute freak and had the perfect look to play this weird, awkward but still sexy alien man. idk when we shifted from casting people who actually fit the role to just bagging the current traditionally attractive white boy of the month, but we need to return to our roots. bring back weird actors!! we need more willem dafoes in the industry

i’m spending the week in nyc this week so obviously as i’m walking the streets i‘m reminded of all my fav flicks set in this city... special effects was written/directed by larry cohen - one of the coolest and weirdest b-movie writer/directors. i love all of his 70s-80s movies. they have the craziest scripts, he casts weird background characters, and always delivers a vibe. he’s usually working on a small budget so there’s a rawness and realness within his bizzaro worlds. it stars a young eric bogosian (talk radio, uncut gems) playing an unhinged delusional director in the midst of making a very meta movie about a murder he committed. his loft in the movie is one of my fav sets ever. indoor stain glass windows, all red bedroom. i’m sure someone on here can tell me it’s precise location. it also stars zoe lund (ms. 45, bad lieutenant) - her accents, look, and range is unreal. i don’t wanna say too much and spoil the plot really, but if you dig movies about movies, brian de palma or abel ferrera stuff, then you should check this out…

this idea of "you don't owe anyone anything" came about through the social media therapists that try to diagnose complete strangers with a multitude of issues and complexes. all it has done has made selfish people more selfish and divided us as a community. you do not owe everyone everything, but if you consider yourself part of a community, a society, you do owe everyone something. at a base level you owe people kindness, respect (as long as they haven't lost the right to it), and basic human decency. you owe your loved ones even more. stop being selfish and rude in the name of treating your so-called "people pleasing."

if one more person tells me to turn one of my hobbies into a business i'm gonna go berserk. is nothing sacred in this late stage capitalist hellscape?

oscar wilde said, "If you want to be a grocer, or a general, or a politician, or a judge, you will invariably become it; that is your punishment. If you never know what you want to be, if you live what some might call the dynamic life but what I will call the artistic life, if each day you are unsure of who you are and what you know you will never become anything, and that is your reward." i remind myself of this quote every time i get jealous of my friends who have it all figured out.
