one of my friends is currently living across the country from me because of college. he's been back in town since late december, and ive seen him a lot since then. hes always been the sort of friend i can talk to for hours on end about nothing in particular. tonight, we played mgs 4 with a group of four or five others, then later hopped on a friend group discord we were both playing different games, and weren't paying too close attention to our own or each others. we talked about so much i can barely remember now, even just a couple minutes after disconnecting. some of my favorite nights recently have just been playing a game and being on call with a friend (both him and others). nothing bombastic, nothing to riotously funny; just simple conversation to fill the air and get a few laughs.

i think the main reason ive been able to keep up a relationship with my friends from home is that we play dungeons and dragons together. even when we're all busy and end up not playing for like 2 months, having those semi-regular calls is huge. also, having that common touch-point of the game and our characters is great while our lives and other interests are going in different directions. ofc this is probably only applicable if you and your friends are nerds

My best friend and I live in different cities and live very busy lifestyles, so we unfortunately don't see eachother very often. A few months ago, we realized that we both drive home from work at the same time, so we started calling eachother while we drive. This has been awesome because that 20 min window right after we leave our offices has transformed from a boring drive to a daily gossip/therapy sesh and we don't have to spend money like we would have to if we just hung out.

being an adult can get real busy, and I don’t have as much time to see my friends anymore. our solution for this has become a regular debrief night every 1-2 months. here’s the structure: - cook or order a meal together - come in the comfiest clothes - late at night is ideal - prepare throughout the week by building a PowerPoint with sections for each friend detailing important updates/occurrences in their lives (I like to present mine as little stories with pics for reference) - appendix at the end of the ppt of new friends, enemies, and everyone’s “OOO” dates so we can make plans accordingly these nights have come to be some of the best memories for us, and is now something everyone in our circles knows about - anytime something happens, someone asks us “will this/I be in the debrief now?” it’s structured fun and a great way to stay connected with my people. highly recommend if you have the time! i have a little routine i like to do on certain days when im feeling empty, a little yearning, overall namelessly melancholic. i like to put on my coat and my book bag and my headphones, go to a coffee shop a few steps from my house, and get an early grey tea and a parmesan pesto stuffed bagel. then i walk ten minutes to the end of my street to this little place i call my own. it's a rock about 20 feet tall, two minutes walking distance from the road. from there i can look across all of the neighborhoods that defined my childhood, at the backs of houses and tops of trees and dogs in the back yard. i usually spend about an hour up there, reading or drawing or what have you. and today is the exact sort of day that calls for a walk like that. some rock time if u will. unfortunately, it's the middle of winter, as cold as a witches tit out, and i have plans from 10 am till 10 pm. usually i take that walk to cure the longing in me, now i long for the walk lol (pictured below; the only photo i have of the view, taken early july)

just had a great time hanging out with all of my best friends, sitting and playing board games and eating pizza. we're all 19-22, but our best times together are sober and listening to good tunes and playing silly games. i love my friends! and happy 20th michael!
