During my quest of personal expression I have found a unique and meaningful way to be more comfortable with the sound of my voice and that is by reading out loud. At first it was weird and awkward to read to the four walls or prying ears but as time went on, I began to allow for my voice to take up space and to fill those anxious gaps inside of me. PS: I read out loud in the privacy of my home 😭 not out in public spaces.

Reading out loud is actually kind of an art form itself. I've noticed that writing is one skill, and reciting is another, that is almost a bit more like acting in a way as well. Sometimes it can be enjoyable. It also helps me focus on reading.

burntlooseends Oh definitely! Reading out loud is an art form. The ability to even give the characters more depth by vocalising their passages is not easy. I’m glad that you find it enjoyable, but what exactly makes you like it? I know so many people who don’t enjoy reading, but I think what they missing is that dramatic element to their reading to keep them engaged. thank you for the comment <333

reading out loud also allows you to understand the characters better (if you are reading a novel or smn) cause actually vocalizing their dialogues make them more real and gives you much more hints on their personalities. i love the way i shape the characters around my voice

craesar I couldn’t agree more! Do you give each character a specific way of talking? it Was nice reading your comment <333

Onyi_Budds i make some toning but not really getting into accents or anything. this tip was from my prof actually, she often says we should read our scripts out loud as much as possible so we could get outside of our heads and see what we actually wrote and if it fits the character. works well with any kind of fiction tho and i loved this topic sm, thanks for brining it up <3333

I used to read to my little sister growing up, even once she learned to read herself. It was one of my favourite things, and something I miss doing now!

the absolute best part of taking care of kids. you can read whatever you want to them if you’re willing to do a silly voice. read finnegans wake and do a brogue, this can be a book for all ages

lyssgia heyyy!!! I totally agree, there’s a sense of liberation when you’re around children. Their joy and happiness is contagious. Reading to children out loud and taking your time with the read is beautiful. Thank you for the comment 🤍

I would add that certain works aren’t quite fully enjoyed and experienced if not read aloud. Paradise lost- John Milton is a great example, and of course any Shakespeare.

mikefish Thank you for the recommendations I’ll definitely look into them 😊!!! There’s something about reading William Shakespeare’s books out loud, it’s so theatrical (obviously!!!) but it gives you a boost of confidence. Thank you for the comment <333

Onyi_Budds Paradise Lost is DIFFICULT to get through I feel I need to warn you. I took a college class where all we did was read it and I still came to every class not understanding anything til my professor explained it to me. sounds beautiful read aloud ofc but comprehension was tricky. Maybe I was just sleep deprived but every time I started reading it I ended up asleep.

isabellaceleste what exactly makes it difficult if you don’t mind me asking? I know your mentioned the comprehension was tricky, but was the plot or complexity of characters making it tricky or something entirely different? Would you say it was boring 😭? Or it just wasn’t your cup of tea?

Onyi_Budds I loved the themes of the book and how it was open to a lot of interesting subtext and implications in a way that was really rebellious and revolutionary regarding power, hierarchies, and god. It was hard to get through because it’s very wordy with long sentences and made up words and archaic words and I would just completely lose track of where we were and what was going on. I think there’s one chapter that’s all a monologue by one angel.

i recently did the same cause i used to stuttered when i read out loud and ever since i started reading to myself aloud (at home ofc) it feels easier to read and speak in front of people even if i still find myself stuttering again

mulla300 heyyy!!! I too used to have a stuttering problem and that was such an insecurity of mine for such a long time. There would be a feeling of embarrassment and anxiety when I had to read out loud in school, say speeches, introduce myself, etc. Even when I’d research so much on how to get rid of it, all would lead to nowhere. The best advice I can give is to not ever feel guilty or embarrassed about how you speak but embrace your voice and begin to nurture your voice instead of dig a hole of social anxiety when it comes to speaking. So in my quest to embrace my voice I started to read out loud, voice journaling, writing poetry and reading it out loud. I decided to embrace who I was whether a stutter would slip in, and even if a stutter did slip in I wasn’t ashamed nor embarrassed. thank you for the comment and if you need any advice I’m here <333 ❤️

i want to read the brothers karamazov and anna karenina this year but i think i’ve developed adult dyslexia. i could read them on my own but it would be a lot more fun if it were read them to me. i could listen to an audiobook but it’s about the principle

with the rise of social media, it can be so easy to get sucked and pulled into someone else’s aesthetic or outlook. i have found inspiration from going within and seeing what i genuinely like when it comes to art, fashion, interior design and so much more. the results were shocking but it comes to show how much i really am a maximalist at heart :) what are some of your favourite interior design styles?

The beauty of documenting your life experiences through your speech and embracing how your voice sounds in that very moment is something I find so special. Our voices are instruments, what use are they if we don’t take delight in the sound of the very thing that forms meaningful connections. Voice journalling has made me so much more confident in my speech, how I sound, public speaking and expressing myself to those around me. It has helped me to be more interactive during conversations with friends, family and strangers. It has opened up the gate for meaningful friendships and closed the gate for social anxiety. I usually go back and listen to the growth of my voice and the small depletions of the insecurity and anxiety of my speech. It’s also a great way for me to document my thoughts when journalling through writing gets overwhelming. Have any of you all tried voice journalling?

Connecting to the sound of music. With every fibre in your being you find true freedom when you allow yourself to live through that moment. Dancing connects me to my body in ways I could never imagine. When I am dancing I am simply uniting with my heart and releasing any tension in my body. How does dancing impact your life?
