with the rise of social media, it can be so easy to get sucked and pulled into someone else’s aesthetic or outlook. i have found inspiration from going within and seeing what i genuinely like when it comes to art, fashion, interior design and so much more. the results were shocking but it comes to show how much i really am a maximalist at heart :) what are some of your favourite interior design styles?

I also find Getting Off the Internet helpful in this quest. Look at old books of interiors from the past, go to museums, visit stately homes and other home museums. Widen your references so you’re not stuck looking at the same shit as everyone else.

phebson couldn't have said it better! i agree with you 100%! social media is a gateway for community but also it can be detrimental to one’s own identity and mental wellbeing

phebson got any recommendations on what types of books to browse or read? Or specific books you like?🙏

This might be a strange solution but it may help: when you see something thats not a garment that you consider beautiful for whatever reason, photograph it and then use your wardrobe to try and capture that energy. For example, I go on a lot of nature walks and something that happens a lot on my walks is that I'll see a lot of beautiful colours that I often don't see worn together, blends of textures like where the leaves of a tree meet the sky etc and so I try to capture that. Like that's how I realised that I love the colour combination of orange and grey. To help I may then look through old magazines and cut out images to make scrapbook pages of inspiration, or if I have the influence of a particular era in mind to express the look I may look at stills of films from that decade (that's another way you can use pinterest that's not so algo heavy). Then you just try stuff on and see how you feel, what you like about your attempts what you don't like etc. Ultimately imo the easiest way to avoid relying on algorithms for fashion inspiration is to take inspiration from things other than clothes and to practice translating the aesthetic principles into garments. Do you like that one brutalist style building with hedges of wild flowers near the place you work? How do you express it in an outfit. Do you keep looking at the sheen of an apple before you bite into it? What fabrics might have a similar effect? And then use the clothes that you have to try things and edit/style your looks until you get to things you like wearing.

comfort has been my main focus since i was a toddler & i’m trying to honor that intuition in adulthood. i want to feel comfortable in my own skin & wardrobe, which is a challenge as a bigger woman raised in purity culture & fashion as vanity. i’m still most comfortable in modest looks & don't see that changing. the quality & texture of fabric is important to me as well. i don’t like anything that tugs or clings in an irritating way. i’m also pragmatic so i want functional clothing that will last & i'm trying to build my mending & maintenance skills. i love leather shoes & bags, they’re so warm & classic & durable. i love buying thrifted things that have some life in them already. i love having one-of-a-kind pieces that i can make my own. i often feel stuck between wanting to express myself through style & wanting to be as nondescript as possible. i like the validation of a good fit but also hate making an entrance. sometimes i’ll put together a look i love & then i’ll swap out one of the elements to ruin it cuz i feel too intimidated. i don’t know if this is because of social anxiety or body image issues or my feelings of not belonging throughout childhood. maybe this is my way of avoiding distraction so i can be present with the people around me. aesthetics-wise, i love dressing like a fun auntie sometimes (typically in spring/summer) & other times i want to lean more masc with edgy streetwear looks (fall/winter). unique prints are a must, rich earth & jewel tones, classic & sturdy footwear, handcrafted jewelry with a story behind it. idk how to weave together these competing energies of warmth & playfulness, stifled rebellion & hesitant individuality. still trying to identify what i like & give myself space to explore & express that!

dress with intention and do everything for your inner child. my 15-year-old self would fucking love my style today. everything is so algorithmic these days and everyone dresses the same. define your own style identity outside of online influence. look through film, music, old magazines, fashion books, and find people/runway collections/characters whose styles resonate with you. study how people throughout history have communicated with their style. (start with lil' kim!) journal about your style journey throughout your life and think about why you dressed the way you did and how it made you feel. ask yourself how you want to dress moving forward for where you wanna go in your life. study runway collections and learn about the designers' intentions with the stories they're telling through their creative work. when you finally purchase a piece you've appreciated for years instead of impulse-buying a bunch of fast fashion clothes, it's so fulfilling. styling is a skill and you'll continue to develop it throughout your life. it's a journey, not a destination.

During my quest of personal expression I have found a unique and meaningful way to be more comfortable with the sound of my voice and that is by reading out loud. At first it was weird and awkward to read to the four walls or prying ears but as time went on, I began to allow for my voice to take up space and to fill those anxious gaps inside of me. PS: I read out loud in the privacy of my home 😭 not out in public spaces.

The beauty of documenting your life experiences through your speech and embracing how your voice sounds in that very moment is something I find so special. Our voices are instruments, what use are they if we don’t take delight in the sound of the very thing that forms meaningful connections. Voice journalling has made me so much more confident in my speech, how I sound, public speaking and expressing myself to those around me. It has helped me to be more interactive during conversations with friends, family and strangers. It has opened up the gate for meaningful friendships and closed the gate for social anxiety. I usually go back and listen to the growth of my voice and the small depletions of the insecurity and anxiety of my speech. It’s also a great way for me to document my thoughts when journalling through writing gets overwhelming. Have any of you all tried voice journalling?

Connecting to the sound of music. With every fibre in your being you find true freedom when you allow yourself to live through that moment. Dancing connects me to my body in ways I could never imagine. When I am dancing I am simply uniting with my heart and releasing any tension in my body. How does dancing impact your life?
