I honestly think itā€™s time to say ā€œfuck Instagramā€ and move on. Instead of trying to change a platform thatā€™s built on control and endless mind-numbing content, why not migrate to spaces that truly support your needs and help you form real connections? For me, itā€™s not about staying and ā€œfighting backā€ in an environment that just isnā€™t workingā€”itā€™s about choosing a community that aligns with my values and where i can genuinely grow. I deleted my instagram account a few months ago and it feels incredible. I think we all deserve better.

I havenā€™t been on Twitter for years and hardly touch FB, but I had been an active user on Instagram since 2012. I really like taking and sharing photos, and that had always been a fun place to do it. No more. With the changes the content moderation changes theyā€™re making, leaving LGBTQ+ folks vulnerable to be targeted; their rolling back of DEI programs; their willing participation in far-right rhetoric and politics; itā€™s all too much and Iā€™m out. As if Metaā€™s platform hadnā€™t already been increasingly enshittified, this was the final straw to announce how much worse it will get. And you know what? It feels freeing. Better to leave it behind and find new platforms to connect with people.

I've been trying to leave instagram for years. Rather for me it's a question of addiction. Especially because of my obsession with reels. But instagram remains for me the easiest way and to expand my creative reach. I've started photography as of last year and have gotten stupidly invested. And I'd never be where I am now without specifically using instagram. What ive done to limit instagram is simply to have a friend put a parental control on my phone with a limit of 45min a day. Works pretty well.
