i try to set aside time at least once a week to browse eventbrite! i'm a big fan of their "show only free events" filter. it takes some patience to dig through, but you can find some real gems. i've been to free theatre shows, boat tours, and cooking workshops. if your area doesn't use eventbrite, try other platforms like peatix, facebook events or local community boards.

Particularly in NYC… the FINDS are endless.. you can really hop on crazy opportunities. Put a partial down payment to guarantee it. Low ball. Do it. So much better than eBay. Akin to CraigsList. Use it as an opportunity to go to a part of the city you haven’t been. Hit an acquaintance up who you know lives in that area, perfect excuse to say hello. Or Bring a read and go to a wine bar solo. Truuuust.

I have this app called Freebie Alerts that allows people to list things they are giving away for free! it's kind of like facebook marketplace but all free things. i also know there's a relatively big reddit forum for the city i live in and people are pretty active there. i once asked if someone was willing to do a puzzle swap and got responses quickly. see if there's a reddit forum for your city!

i always love doing something different each year with my friends on my birthday. last year, we went swimming at our neighborhood pool and talked until our fingers were pruney. afterwards, we had dinner at a nearby restaurant, talked some more and ended the night with me blowing out the candle on a molten lava cake topped with vanilla ice cream. this year, i’m thinking of going canoeing with them! i'm really looking forward to that.
