After seeing that Spotify donated $150000 to the trump inauguration, pay artists nothing and replaced thousands of staff with AI I think it’s time for me to step away from the app even though it’s painfully convenient, I would rather use an mp3 player and purchase albums from artists on bandcamp (which isn’t perfect either) but at least a larger percentage of that money will go to the actual artists. I feel like 2025 is the year of choosing ethics over convenience because what is convenient for us is usually at the expense of others.

With the exception of some hand me downs and record store purchased cds. It makes it so much more fun for me. and i want to get into burning music myself down the road. Physical media has my <3

Hopefully this is the year we wake up a very necessary case against Spotify and push for artists rights.

definitely can’t blame you for moving away from spotify. i’m moving away from meta for the same reasons. i’m probably going to do something similar to this. i have a lot of vinyls but i want to get a small cassette player. there’s an awesome youtube video called the playlistification of music (i think??) and it really opened up my perspective to how the algorithm was associating specific songs together with what it classifies as emotions. im hoping that in addition to the ethical relief from choosing an alternative route to consuming media i will also notice a different in my mood. i felt leagues better after deleting instagram so maybe this will have a similar effect.

junie23b yah agree I think it's good we have people on both fronts, those concerned about physical preservation and digital archivists

eatgraeps hopping in here to say I deleted the insta app off my phone, so now I only access my account via computer browser. It’s not perfect but it’s helped my mental health enormously!

eatgraeps i still have my accounts but i deleted the apps. honestly feel like if i don’t have someone’s phone number they probably aren’t close enough to stay in contact. anyone i am close with could get ahold of me through someone else. i still have my band account activated because promoting is hard without it but trying to move away from it

i canceled my Spotify account over the summer and have spent the last few months rebuilding my digital music library on a refurbished iPod Touch. reading critiques of the app (and it’s enshittification), i realized i wasn’t even sure of my own musical tastes and preferences. i had stopped picking for myself, stopped seeking out new music, ceasing to know how to choose what i wanted or articulate what i like. breaking free from the algorithm has been such a joy! i’m borrowing gobs of music from the library, rebuilding my old playlists, and consuming more music than i have in years. and better yet, my data isn’t being tracked by Spotify and i own what’s in my personal library. further, my receptors are more open when i’m out in the world exposed to music, searching for recommendations in an organic way.

I’m determined to use my phone about 90% less in the new year. I’ve replaced IG with Pi.Fyi & now I’m using an ipod for all of my music!!! There’s something so sacred about the process of curating the music that actually takes so much time. You have to buy or download the music (which, buying on itunes has felt like a supportive option for the musicians I admire. $10 bucks for one of my favorite albums. down.) Then you drag it onto your ipod. Watch the “Synchronizing” wheel on your ipod. Eject the Ipod. Go to Cover Flow to see your albums lined up. It’s amazing, and it requires effort and time. Versus on spotify, you just press the plus button and pay the monthly 9.99. Its so wild. What music do I actually like/need to get through my days? I’ve let the machine of algorithms and apps decide. I literally was stumped trying to think of what music I HAD to have. I want my life to feel more intentional in every way. I want to be extremely present. But, that can feel like so much pressure and overwhelming. This is such a fun refreshing start. GO GET ONE!!! 🎵🎶🎧

i know i know bandcamp is evil whatever. something about this just feels right. the clean interface. memories of youth. the scrobbles w my scrobbling app are more consistent than spotify's godawful built in scrobbler too. i love giving money to people when i can.

I’ve recently read a book about the concept of “soundwalking” and listening to the beauty of your surroundings exploring your city and neighborhood. I used to become pretty over stimulated by the sounds of the world and would used my headphones religiously to block any sounds of the outside world from getting in. But I started to wonder if the things I use to protect myself from the outside world also isolating me from experiencing it to its fullest potential. Maybe the sounds of construction and people talking and birds and busses aren’t just “sound pollution“ but a reverberation of society and life. An organic inprov performance just for me where I am right now in the world. it made me think that anything has the potential to be a work of art depending on your perspective. I’ve started walking with a tape recorder everywhere I go and I record the sounds around me as an auditory diary of sorts. it’s fun to listen back and be reminded of the sounds of the bowling alley or the cafe or the sound check at the punk show. Since this perspective shift I’ve become allot less over stimulated by the world and become more creative with my greatest resource: the world around me.
