I sometimes worry that I wouldn’t be such a feminist if I had bigger tits.

Definitely wasted far too many of my teenage and early 20s years playing the ~*cool girl*~ and pretending to shun things I actually really liked. Coincidentally, a lot of these ‘embarrassing’ interests were basically just things targeted towards women. (Why was Twilight met with such vitriol by the public but Star Wars is an essential watch??) So like what you like! Wear it on a damn t-shirt! And ask yourself if it’s actually just misogyny that’s making you second guess it.

women watch each other; i watch my girlfriends, and i’m noticing a shift! the waning years of the trump era thrust us—the ones who date men, anyway—into serious relationships. we tweeted about our boyfriends and wore short dresses, espousing an ironic but undeniably effusive allegiance to some kind of nouveau #trad-itionalism. “feminist” became a pejorative and we lost our shit when lana dropped “norman fucking rockwell!” but now? everybody’s breaking up and getting her own apartment! the girls are sleeping around and wearing interesting pants with the tabi boots they bought during the second term of the obama administration. they’re speaking critically of “porn” in hushed tones, or in lower-case letters on twitter. as a friend of mine recently muttered, eyebrow raised: “maybe feminism made some points”

When I think about ‘my tastes’ in an expansive way, I think the common thread is explorations of femme-ness— living as a woman, being perceived as a woman, experiencing girlhood, existing as a woman within (or really under) masculine cultures/political structures/households etc. I often joke to my friends that I don’t read male authors because I don’t want a tourists guide, but I do find that almost all of the art I enjoy is women’s work. Favorite artists: Faith Ringold, Camille Claudel, Artemisia Gentileschi, Claudette Johnson Favorite poets/writers/authors: Maggie O’Farrell, Ada Lìmon, bell hooks, Charlotte Brontë, Valeria Luiselli Favorite directors: Celine Sciamma, Kelly Reichardt, Celine Song, Sarah Polley, Greta Gerwig Favorite films: Petite Maman, The Worst Person In The World, Frances Ha, Ladybird Outside of the art I consume, I think my life is very oriented around womanhood— my apartment is overtly a woman’s house, my closest friends are women, the ways that I exercise and cook and dress are all intentionally oriented around my woman’s body and it’s cycles and needs but also the expression of being a woman, like not just a human person but a Woman, in the way that bell hooks and Virginia Woolf write about.

My toaster is having a bad week so she doesn’t have the energy to hold the lever down anymore. Which means I have to stand there pressing it down for three minutes making sure my toast doesn’t burn. I used to take that time for granted, now it’s being robbed of me by my broken toaster. Trying to give her grace.

Give your beauty to the people who can stare back in real-time and give you theirs. I rarely think I look like myself in pictures and that’s because I look like me outside where my expressions harmonize with the sunlight. This portrait of Dorothy Beridge, (by Joseph Wright of Derby) is on display in MIA and they actually have a plaque describing her as having plain features, which is the worst insult of the 18th century. She‘s trapped in a museum where the professionals call her uggo. I want to meet her in person where those features are meant to be seen. But, she gave that to her friends and family, not the strangers passing her by on their way to the elevators.
