journaling is hard so most days my entries look like: “made the bed, texted kimmy back, solved the nyt mini in 45 seconds. Got gnocchi for lunch. didnt go to class, stomach pain. Need Pepto, dish soap and craft supplies.” It helps me feel better. Reminds me I’m in my body doing things even when those things aren’t productive, and those things are part of living, too. Mostly it’s nice to look at the things you did or didn’t do with total impartiality. just quiets things down for a bit.

i know it's basic but keeping a daily journal has been one of the most grounding things in my life. you don't need to shell out $$$ on a travelers' notebook and a snazzy pen, but just repeating the daily act of physically writing your thoughts down is a wonderful thing. i keep a daily recollection/diary sort of thing along with a sort of freeform commonplace book where i jot down thoughts or lyric ideas or cool words i read and had to look up definitions of. it's nerd shit but the sort of positive affirming nerd shit that everyone needs at least a little bit of. also the amount of stuff you forget over the course of a week/month/year is astounding -- doing this is fun in part because you can read through your past entries (good and bad) again with fresh eyes.

i have a couple of different things i like to do: 1. reflect on the day through the senses - make a chart of things you saw, ate, smelled, touched, etc. 2. write/brain dump immediately you wake up, aka “morning pages” i tend to write a lot about my dreams from the night before and i remember them better 3. i feel like i journaled more when i let myself write in word bubbles, doodle, free association, etc. 4. subscribe to moonlists.com really great reflective journal prompt email newsletter

this is only a habit i have picked up in the last year, but it has made a world of difference. i will write about things that i am thinking about or stuff i need to do or just chronicle my day. i just find it very grounding or like a reset to my thought processes.
